Whole-home air filtration means trapping particles like dust, pollen, pet dander and wildfire smoke in a filter at your furnace or air handler, so every bit of air the system moves gets cleaned. The filter's MERV rating tells you how fine a particle it catches. For Sacramento's smoke seasons, the EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher, or the highest rating your system can handle.

The catch is airflow. A dense filter crammed into a small return grille can choke an older system. The usual fix is a 4- or 5-inch media filter cabinet, which filters at MERV 13 with far less restriction. For odors, gases and germs, see air purification. Filters capture particles, not gases.

MERV ratings explained

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) comes from ASHRAE Standard 52.2. It runs from 1 to 16. Higher numbers catch smaller particles, and they usually restrict airflow more unless the filter has more surface area.

MERVCatchesTypical filterGood for
1 to 4Large particles: lint, carpet fibers, coarse dustThin fiberglass panelProtecting the equipment only. Little help for the air you breathe.
5 to 8Most pollen, mold spores, dust mite debris, larger pet danderBasic 1-inch pleatedStandard household dust control.
9 to 12Adds a good share of fine dust and particles in the 1 to 3 micron rangeBetter 1-inch pleated or mediaAllergies, pets, homes near busy roads.
13 to 16At MERV 13, at least half of 0.3 to 1 micron particles, the size range of smoke, plus most larger ones4- or 5-inch media, or a high-end 1-inchWildfire smoke, asthma, allergies. MERV 13 is the EPA's smoke-season recommendation.

A filter only works if air goes through it. A MERV 13 filter with a half-inch gap around the edge lets unfiltered air bypass it. Fit matters as much as rating.

Filter sizes and media cabinets

Most Sacramento homes have one of two setups:

  • 1-inch filters in a return grille, in a hallway ceiling or wall. Sizes like 16x25x1 or 20x25x1 are common. The printed size is nominal, so a "20x25" filter is usually a bit smaller. Measure the slot, not the old filter.
  • A filter slot at the furnace or air handler, in the garage, attic or closet. Sometimes this is a thin 1-inch rack. Sometimes it's a media cabinet.

A media filter cabinet holds a 4- or 5-inch-deep pleated filter right at the equipment. The deep pleats give it many times the surface area of a 1-inch filter, so it can filter at MERV 11 to 13 with less airflow restriction, and it typically lasts 6 to 12 months between changes. For most homes that want better filtration, adding a media cabinet is the most effective upgrade.

If a home has filters at both the grille and the equipment, use one or the other, not both stacked. Double filtering adds restriction without much benefit.

Static pressure: why "just use a better filter" can backfire

Every furnace and air handler is built to push air against a limited amount of resistance, called static pressure. Many residential systems are rated around 0.5 inches of water column total. Older Sacramento systems with undersized returns are often at or above that before the filter is even counted.

Drop a dense 1-inch MERV 13 filter into that system and you can get:

  • Less cooling and heating. Lower airflow means less capacity, so far rooms suffer first.
  • A frozen evaporator coil in summer, which can lead to water leaks and an AC repair call.
  • Furnace overheating. Low airflow can trip the high-limit switch and shorten heat exchanger life.
  • Noise and higher energy use, especially with variable-speed blowers that ramp up to compensate.

The right way to choose is to measure. A technician can test static pressure with your current filter, then recommend a filter, a media cabinet or an added return based on the numbers.

Filtration options compared

OptionHow it worksGood fit for
Better 1-inch pleated filterSame slot, higher MERVSystems with enough return area. Cheapest step, but changed more often.
Media filter cabinet4- or 5-inch filter installed at the equipmentMost homes wanting MERV 11 to 13 without the airflow penalty.
Added return airNew return grille and duct to cut restrictionSystems with high static pressure or one small return.
HEPA bypass systemA separate unit with its own fan pulls part of the return air through a true HEPA filter and sends it backSevere allergies, asthma or medical needs.

About HEPA: true HEPA filters are too restrictive to put directly in most home HVAC systems. Whole-home HEPA is done as a bypass. It cleans a portion of the air each pass, and over time it treats all of it. For many homes, a MERV 13 media cabinet plus a portable HEPA cleaner in the bedroom is a simpler alternative.

Wildfire smoke season in Sacramento

Smoke from fires in the Sierra foothills and across Northern California can settle over the valley for days. Fine smoke particles get into homes even with windows shut. The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD) posts daily air quality forecasts and alerts, and AirNow shows current readings.

What to do when the AQI turns unhealthy

  • Install a MERV 13 filter, or the highest rating your system handles, before smoke season, not during it
  • Keep windows and doors closed and turn off whole-house fans
  • Run the HVAC fan in "on" mode so air keeps passing through the filter
  • Close any fresh-air intake if your system has one
  • Add a portable HEPA cleaner in bedrooms, and pick a CARB-certified model
  • Check the filter after a long smoke event and replace it when it's dark or loaded

Filters remove smoke particles but not smoke odor, which is made of gases. For lingering smoke smell, activated carbon helps. See air purification.

How often to change filters in Sacramento

Filter typeTypical intervalChange sooner if
1-inch pleatedEvery 1 to 3 monthsPeak summer cooling, pets, nearby construction, smoke events
4- or 5-inch mediaEvery 6 to 12 monthsHeavy smoke season, pets, a remodel
HEPA bypassPer the manufacturer, with a pre-filter changed more oftenPre-filter looks gray or loaded

Sacramento systems run hard from May through September, and smoke season overlaps that stretch. Check 1-inch filters monthly in summer. A filter that looks gray is already slowing airflow. During regular maintenance such as an AC tune-up or furnace tune-up, the technician checks the filter and its fit.

What does better filtration cost?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Filter upgrade vs. new cabinet. A different filter costs far less than installing a media cabinet.
  • Equipment location. Attic and tight closet installs take more time than a garage furnace.
  • Return air changes. Adding a return or enlarging a grille adds duct work.
  • HEPA bypass. A separate powered unit with its own ducting.
  • Replacement filter cost over time. Media filters cost more each but last much longer.

Where we install air filtration

We install media cabinets and filtration upgrades throughout Sacramento and nearby communities, including Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove and Auburn.

Air filtration FAQ

What MERV rating should I use in Sacramento?

MERV 13 is a good target for smoke season and allergies, which is what the EPA recommends for wildfire smoke if your system can handle it. In an older system with a small return, a 1-inch MERV 13 can restrict airflow too much. A media cabinet or added return solves that.

Can a high-MERV filter damage my AC or furnace?

It can if it restricts airflow beyond what the blower is designed for. Symptoms include a frozen AC coil, a furnace that shuts off on its high-limit switch and weak airflow at the registers. A static pressure test shows whether your system can take a higher-MERV filter.

How often should I change my furnace or AC filter?

One-inch filters usually need changing every 1 to 3 months, and monthly during Sacramento's summer peak or smoke events. Four- and 5-inch media filters typically last 6 to 12 months. Pets and remodeling shorten both.

Is a media filter cabinet worth it?

For most homes that want MERV 11 to 13, yes. The deeper filter has much more surface area, so it filters fine particles with less restriction and fewer changes than a 1-inch filter.

Can I put a HEPA filter in my furnace?

Not directly in most homes. True HEPA filters are too restrictive for standard residential blowers. Whole-home HEPA uses a bypass unit with its own fan, or you can use portable HEPA cleaners in key rooms.

Will a better filter remove smoke smell?

No. Filters catch smoke particles, but odor comes from gases that pass through. Activated carbon, found in some media filters and purifiers, is what reduces odors.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10
