Smart thermostat installation means wiring a Wi-Fi thermostat to your existing furnace, AC or heat pump so it gets steady power, controls every stage correctly, and runs on a schedule you can change from your phone. In Sacramento, the biggest payoff is setting it up to pre-cool before SMUD's weekday 5 to 8 p.m. peak.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned Sacramento HVAC contractor with NATE-certified technicians. We check that the thermostat you want will work with your equipment, solve C-wire problems, and set up heat pump, multi-stage and zoned systems so they run the way they were designed.

The C-wire problem

Most smart thermostats need constant 24-volt power for the screen and Wi-Fi. That power comes from the C (common) wire. Many older Sacramento homes were wired with only four or five conductors, and the C terminal at the furnace is empty.

Without a C-wire, some thermostats "power steal" by trickling current through the heating or cooling wires. That can work, but it often causes trouble:

  • The thermostat goes blank or drops off Wi-Fi
  • The furnace or AC clicks on and off on its own
  • Rechargeable batteries in the thermostat keep dying
  • The blower runs when it should not, or a heat pump chatters

How we fix it, from simplest to most work:

  1. Use a spare wire. Often there is an unused conductor folded back in the wall. We connect it to C at both ends.
  2. Add an adapter. A power adapter kit at the furnace can add a C-wire over the existing cable when no spare exists.
  3. Run new thermostat cable. When the old cable is too short on conductors for your system, especially heat pumps and two-stage equipment, we pull a new one.

Heat pump compatibility

Heat pumps use different wiring and settings than a furnace and AC. A wrong setting here does not just waste energy. It can leave you with cold air in winter or expensive backup heat running when it does not need to.

  • Reversing valve (O/B). The thermostat has to energize the valve in the right mode. Most brands use O (cool), some use B (heat). Set it wrong and heating and cooling swap.
  • Auxiliary and emergency heat. Many heat pumps have electric heat strips. The thermostat should only call them when the heat pump cannot keep up, not every time you bump the setpoint.
  • Outdoor temperature lockouts. Setting balance points keeps the heat strips off on most Sacramento winter days, when the heat pump alone can handle the load.
  • Dual fuel. If you have a heat pump with a gas furnace backup, the thermostat decides when to switch. We set it based on your equipment and rates.
  • Communicating systems. Some variable-speed systems use a proprietary control and lose features with a standard thermostat. We check before you buy.

Thinking about switching from gas to a heat pump? See heat pump installation.

O/BOrange or dark blueHeat pump reversing valve

Colors are a convention, not a rule. Installers do not always follow them, which is why we check the connections at the furnace or air handler, not just at the wall.

Zoning and multiple systems

Two-story Sacramento homes often have an upstairs that runs several degrees hotter in summer. There are a few ways thermostats help:

  • Two systems, two thermostats. Each gets its own smart thermostat and schedule.
  • One system with a zone panel. Motorized dampers in the ducts send air where it is needed. Each zone thermostat connects to the zone panel, not directly to the furnace, so the wiring has to be done at the panel.
  • Remote room sensors. Some smart thermostats average or prioritize temperatures from sensors in other rooms, which can help a single-zone home balance day and night.
  • Mini-splits. Ductless heads usually use their own controls. If you are adding a ductless mini-split to fix a hot room, ask us about control options.

If one room is always hot even with the right thermostat, the problem may be leaky or undersized ducts. See air duct sealing.

SMUD time-of-day rates and pre-cooling

Most SMUD residential customers are on the Time-of-Day (5-8 p.m.) rate. At the time of writing (2026):

  • Peak hours are weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. Weekends and holidays are off-peak all day.
  • In summer (June 1 through September 30), the peak price is more than double the off-peak price, and noon to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight are billed at a mid-peak price.
  • The rest of the year has only peak and off-peak, with a smaller gap between them.

SMUD itself recommends pre-cooling the home before 5 p.m. on hot days. A smart thermostat does this automatically. A typical summer schedule cools the house a few degrees below your comfort setting in the mid-afternoon, then lets the temperature drift up slowly from 5 to 8 p.m. The house holds the coolness, the AC runs less during peak, and you are still comfortable when the Delta breeze arrives in the evening.

SMUD also runs a smart thermostat program, launched as My Energy Optimizer Partner and now part of My Energy Optimizer, which adjusts enrolled thermostats during a few summer peak events. It has grown to tens of thousands of participants. Check smud.org for current enrollment terms, compatible thermostats and any incentive.

Homes served by PG&E in Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties, or by Roseville Electric, have different rate plans and programs. We set the schedule around whichever plan you are on.

What we check before installing

Compatibility and wiring checks

  • Your equipment type: gas furnace, AC, heat pump, dual fuel, boiler or zoned system
  • Number of heating and cooling stages, and whether the system is communicating
  • Available conductors at the wall and at the furnace or air handler
  • Transformer voltage and condition, and the low-voltage fuse on the control board
  • Line-voltage baseboard heaters and millivolt wall furnaces, which most smart thermostats cannot control directly
  • Wi-Fi signal at the thermostat location
  • A good mounting spot away from sun, supply vents and kitchen heat

How installation works

  1. Compatibility check. Tell us your equipment and the thermostat you want, or let us recommend one that fits.
  2. Wiring. We confirm every connection at the wall and the equipment, and add a C-wire if needed.
  3. Configuration. We set system type, stages, O/B, auxiliary heat lockouts and fan settings.
  4. Testing. We run heating, cooling and fan from the thermostat and confirm the equipment responds correctly.
  5. Schedule and app setup. We help you connect it to Wi-Fi and the app and set a schedule that fits your rate plan.

What does smart thermostat installation cost?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • The thermostat. Whether you supply it or we do, and which model.
  • C-wire work. A spare wire is quick. An adapter or new cable run takes more time.
  • System type. Heat pumps, dual fuel, multi-stage and zoned systems take more setup.
  • Number of thermostats. Homes with two systems or a zone panel need more than one.

Installing it during a tune-up or service visit saves a separate trip.

Where we install thermostats

We install smart thermostats across the Sacramento region, including Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Folsom and Natomas.

Smart thermostat FAQ

Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?

Most smart thermostats run more reliably with one, and some require it. Without a C-wire, power-stealing models can cause short cycling, Wi-Fi drops or dead batteries. We can usually add one using a spare wire, an adapter kit or a new cable run.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Most will, as long as they support heat pumps with auxiliary heat and are wired and configured correctly. The reversing valve setting and auxiliary heat lockout are the two most common setup mistakes. Some communicating variable-speed systems need the manufacturer's own control to keep all their features.

Does a smart thermostat save money on SMUD's time-of-day rate?

It can, mostly by shifting cooling out of the weekday 5 to 8 p.m. peak. Pre-cooling in the afternoon and letting the house drift a few degrees during peak cuts the most expensive hours of AC use. Savings depend on your home's insulation, your schedule and how far you let the temperature drift.

Does SMUD have a smart thermostat program?

Yes. At the time of writing (2026), SMUD runs My Energy Optimizer (launched as My Energy Optimizer Partner), which adjusts enrolled smart thermostats during peak events. Enrollment terms, eligible thermostats and any incentive can change, so check smud.org before you sign up.

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?

If you have a simple gas furnace and AC with a C-wire already in place, many homeowners do. Heat pumps, dual fuel, multi-stage, zoned or communicating systems, and homes without a C-wire, are where mistakes happen. A wrong setting can run expensive backup heat or damage equipment.

How long does smart thermostat installation take?

A straight swap with a C-wire in place is usually under an hour. Adding a C-wire, running new cable or setting up a zoned or heat pump system takes longer. We finish with a full test of heating, cooling and fan.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
