Air duct cleaning removes debris, dust and contaminants from the inside of your supply and return ducts, registers, plenums and the air handler, using powerful HEPA-filtered vacuums and agitation tools. It's worth doing when something specific got into the ducts: construction dust, rodent or insect contamination, visible mold or heavy debris blowing from the vents.

The U.S. EPA does not recommend cleaning ducts on a routine schedule, only as needed. We'll tell you honestly whether your system needs it. If your real problem is leaks or damage, duct sealing or duct repair is the fix, not cleaning.

When duct cleaning is worth it

EPA guidance says to consider duct cleaning when there's a clear reason, such as:

  • Substantial visible mold growth inside hard (sheet metal) ducts or on other parts of the system. Ask the provider to show you the mold. A lab test is the only way to confirm it, and the moisture source has to be fixed or the mold will come back.
  • Vermin. Ducts infested with rodents or insects.
  • Excessive dust or debris. Ducts clogged with debris, or particles visibly blowing out of the supply registers.

In Sacramento homes, these are the situations where we most often see a real need:

  • After a remodel. Drywall dust, sawdust and plaster get pulled into returns when the system runs during construction. That fine dust can coat the blower and coil too.
  • After rodents. Roof rats and mice in attic ducts leave droppings, urine and nesting material. Contaminated flex duct usually has to be replaced, so cleaning and duct repair often go together.
  • After a smoke event, sometimes. Most wildfire smoke seasons call for new filters, not duct cleaning. Cleaning makes sense if ash or soot actually got into the ducts, for example if the system ran without a filter or the home was close to a fire.
  • Moving into a home with an unknown history, where an inspection shows heavy buildup, pet hair mats or debris.

When it isn't worth it

The EPA notes there's no evidence that a light amount of household dust in ducts poses a health risk. Most of the dust you breathe comes from activity in the home, cooking and the outdoors, not from the ducts. The EPA also notes duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems, and there's little evidence that cleaning ducts alone improves system efficiency.

If your ducts have a normal light layer of dust and nothing else, a better filter and a sealed return will do more for your air. See air filtration.

What a proper source-removal cleaning includes

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) publishes the ACR standard for assessing, cleaning and restoring HVAC systems. Its 2025 edition is free to download. The method it describes is source removal: put the ducts under negative pressure with a HEPA-filtered vacuum, then loosen the debris so it's pulled out of the house rather than into your rooms.

  1. Assessment. Inspect the ducts, registers, air handler, blower and coil. Note what's there, where the debris came from and whether cleaning is actually needed.
  2. Scope and protection. Agree on which parts get cleaned. Protect floors and furniture, and seal off registers so dust can't escape into rooms.
  3. Negative pressure. A HEPA-filtered vacuum connects to the duct system, usually downstream of the section being cleaned, so cleaned sections stay under suction.
  4. Agitation. Rotary brushes, air whips or air nozzles knock debris off the duct walls toward the vacuum. Tools are matched to the duct type so flex duct and duct liner aren't torn.
  5. Clean the whole system, not just the ducts. Supply and return ducts, registers and grilles, plenums, the blower and, when accessible, the coil and drain pan. Cleaning the ducts but leaving a dirty blower recontaminates the system.
  6. Verification. Visual inspection, with photos, of the cleaned surfaces. NADCA's standard includes a surface comparison test and a vacuum test for this.
  7. Close up. Reseal access openings properly, install a new filter and confirm the system runs normally.

Red flags when hiring a duct cleaner

  • Very low "whole house" prices that turn into upsells once the crew is inside.
  • Claims that cleaning will cure allergies or cut your bills. The EPA says the evidence doesn't support that.
  • Pressure to apply biocides or sealants inside the ducts. The EPA says research hasn't shown that they work in duct cleaning or that they are safe. They should never go on unless the ducts are cleaned first and you agree.
  • Only cleaning the registers or using a shop vacuum without negative pressure on the system.
  • No before and after photos.
  • Disturbing suspect old duct tape. In homes ducted before about 1980, seam tape and wrap may contain asbestos and should be tested before any work.

What does duct cleaning cost?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Number of supply and return runs and the size of the home.
  • What's in the ducts. Construction dust and rodent contamination take longer than light debris.
  • Equipment cleaning. Including the blower, coil and drain pan adds time.
  • Duct type and access. Flex duct, duct board and tight attics need gentler methods.
  • Replacement instead of cleaning. Heavily soiled flex duct is often cheaper to replace than to clean.

Keep the ducts clean afterward

  • Change the filter on schedule and make sure it fits the slot with no gaps. See air filtration for MERV ratings and change intervals.
  • Turn the system off during sanding and demolition, or seal the returns and run it only with a fresh filter.
  • Seal leaky returns so the system isn't pulling dust from the attic or garage.
  • Get yearly maintenance. An AC tune-up keeps the coil and drain clean, which is where mold usually starts.

Air duct cleaning FAQ

Is air duct cleaning worth it?

It's worth it when there's a specific problem: visible mold, rodent or insect contamination, construction debris or debris blowing from the registers. The EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning, and a light layer of dust is not a health concern on its own.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

There's no set schedule. Clean them when an inspection finds a reason, such as after a remodel or a pest problem. Good filtration and sealed returns keep most systems clean for many years.

Should I clean my ducts after wildfire smoke?

Usually not. Replace the filter after a heavy smoke event and check it again a few weeks later. Cleaning makes sense only if ash or soot visibly got into the ducts, such as when the system ran without a filter.

Will duct cleaning help my allergies?

Not on its own. The EPA notes duct cleaning hasn't been shown to prevent health problems. A higher-MERV filter that fits properly, changed on schedule, usually does more for allergy sufferers.

How long does duct cleaning take?

A typical single-family home takes several hours to most of a day, depending on the number of runs, what's in them and whether the blower and coil are cleaned too.

What is NADCA source removal?

It's the cleaning method described in NADCA's ACR standard. The duct system is put under negative pressure with a HEPA-filtered vacuum, and brushes or air tools loosen debris so it's pulled out instead of blown into the home.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
