Furnace repair means finding the one part that is keeping your furnace from heating safely, usually an ignitor, flame sensor, pressure switch, limit switch or blower motor, and cleaning or replacing it. Most no-heat calls in Sacramento come down to one of those parts or a clogged filter, and many are fixed in a single visit.
Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC contractor in Sacramento. Our NATE-certified technicians repair gas and electric furnaces in homes, multi-family buildings and light commercial spaces, with 24/7 emergency service. We check for carbon monoxide when we repair a furnace, because a furnace that lights is not always a furnace that is safe.
To shut it off, set the thermostat to Off, then turn off the switch on or near the furnace (it looks like a light switch). If you smell gas, leave the shutoff to the gas utility or fire department.
Every start, a furnace runs a safety sequence: inducer fan, pressure switch, ignitor, gas valve, flame sensor, then blower. When one step fails, the furnace stops, so the symptom usually points to the part.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fan runs, no flame, tries again and locks out | Cracked or worn hot surface ignitor | Replace the ignitor and check voltage to it |
| Flame lights, then shuts off after a few seconds | Dirty flame sensor | Clean or replace the sensor, check the ground |
| Inducer hums but nothing lights, error code blinks | Pressure switch, blocked vent or plugged condensate trap | Clear the vent or drain, test or replace the switch |
| Heats for a few minutes, shuts off, repeats | Limit switch tripping from overheating | Fix the airflow problem first, then test the limit |
| Burners run but little or no air comes out | Failed blower motor or capacitor | Replace the capacitor or motor |
| Weak heat, high bills, furnace runs constantly | Clogged filter or restricted ducts | New filter, check ducts and registers |
Most furnaces use a hot surface ignitor that glows like a toaster element. They are brittle, and a hairline crack is enough to stop ignition. We also check the voltage feeding it, since low voltage shortens ignitor life.
The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that proves the burner is lit. A light coating on the rod weakens the signal, so the control board shuts the gas off as a precaution. Cleaning it is often the whole repair.
The pressure switch confirms the inducer fan is pulling exhaust out of the furnace. It trips when the vent is blocked, the inducer is weak, or, on a 95% furnace, when the condensate trap or drain backs up. Replacing the switch without finding why it opened is a common mistake.
The high limit shuts the burners off when the heat exchanger gets too hot. If it keeps tripping, the furnace is not moving enough air. Clogged filters, closed registers, crushed ducts and a weak blower are the usual causes. If we find damaged ductwork, our air duct repair page explains the fix.
The blower moves both heat in winter and cooling in summer, so it works year round. A failing capacitor or motor shows up as humming, slow starts or no airflow. A filter that has not been changed in months is the most common cause of overheating and limit trips, and it is the easiest one to prevent.
The heat exchanger keeps combustion gases separate from the air you breathe. After years of heating and cooling, the metal can crack, often at bends and seams. A crack can let carbon monoxide into the airstream or disturb the flame.
On a repair visit we look at the flame, measure CO in the flue and near the supply registers, and inspect the heat exchanger where we can reach it. If we confirm a crack, we will show you what we found, shut off the gas to the furnace and explain your options. Depending on the furnace's age and parts warranty, that can mean a heat exchanger replacement or a furnace replacement.
California law requires carbon monoxide alarms in homes with gas appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage. Put one on every level and outside sleeping areas, and replace them when they reach the end of life printed on the back.
Sacramento winters are mild by most standards, with average December lows in the low 40s and a handful of nights at or near freezing. The hard weeks come when tule fog settles into the valley, usually after the first big rains of late fall. The sun stays hidden, daytime highs barely recover, and the furnace runs long cycles for days at a time.
That is when weak parts show up. A furnace that sat idle from March to November, then runs for hours on the first foggy cold spell, puts stress on ignitors, blower motors and capacitors all at once. Many Sacramento homes also have the furnace in the attic, where months of summer heat are hard on wiring and electronics. A fall furnace tune-up catches most of these problems before the cold arrives.
Still no heat? Call us rather than resetting the furnace again and again.
Most furnace repairs are worth doing. Replacement makes sense when the furnace is past about 15 to 20 years old, the heat exchanger is cracked, or repairs keep stacking up. If you replace, ask whether a heat pump fits better, since Sacramento's mild winters suit them well.
Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.
What moves the price:
We repair furnaces across Sacramento and nearby communities in Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties, including Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks and Elk Grove.
Fall cleaning and safety testing that heads off most winter breakdowns.
When repairs no longer make sense, a properly sized new furnace.
Wired correctly for your furnace, with schedules that fit SMUD rates.
The most common causes are a furnace that failed to light and locked out, a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter tripping the limit switch, or a thermostat set to Fan On instead of Auto. On a high-efficiency furnace, a plugged condensate drain can also stop the burners while the fan keeps running. If a new filter and a thermostat check do not fix it, call for a diagnosis.
Short cycling usually means the furnace is overheating and the limit switch is shutting the burners off. Restricted airflow from a dirty filter, closed vents or damaged ducts is the usual cause. A failing flame sensor or an oversized furnace can cause it too.
It can be. A crack can let carbon monoxide into the air in your home or disturb the burner flame. If one is confirmed, the furnace should not be used until the heat exchanger or the furnace is replaced. Make sure you have working CO alarms on every level of the home.
Yes. Airflow Heating & Air provides 24/7 emergency service in the Sacramento area. Call (916) 476-2222 and describe what the furnace is doing. If you smell gas or a CO alarm is sounding, leave the home and call 911 first.
A small repair on an older furnace can still be the right call. If the heat exchanger is cracked, the repair is expensive, or you have had several breakdowns in a few years, replacement usually makes more sense. We will show you both options so you can compare them.
Tell us what your furnace is doing and we will send a NATE-certified technician to find the cause, fix it and check it for carbon monoxide. Emergency service is available 24/7.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
