Whole-home air purification adds technology to your HVAC system that targets what filters can't catch well: odors and gases, mold and bacteria growing on the cooling coil, and some airborne germs. The main options are UV-C lights, activated carbon and electronic purifiers such as photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) and ionization.

Purification adds to good filtration. It does not replace it. If your concern is dust, pollen or wildfire smoke particles, start with air filtration. In California, any electronic air cleaner must also meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) ozone limit, so choose carefully.

UV-C lights: coil lights vs. air lights

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) uses UV-C light to damage the DNA of microorganisms. In a home HVAC system, it's installed in one of two ways:

  • Coil lights shine on the indoor evaporator coil and drain pan around the clock. The coil is cold and wet in summer, which is where mold and slime tend to grow. Constant exposure keeps those surfaces cleaner, which can help airflow, drain performance and musty smells. This is the most reliable use of UV in a home system.
  • Air-stream lights try to treat germs as air rushes past. Air moves through the duct fast, so exposure time is very short and results depend heavily on lamp strength and placement. Expect modest benefit.

Practical notes: UV lamps lose output over time and are usually replaced about once a year. UV-C can degrade some plastics and wire insulation nearby, so placement matters. Never look at a lit UV-C lamp. Choose lamps labeled ozone-free.

Whole-home purifiers and carbon

"Whole-home purifier" covers a wide range of products installed in the ductwork or at the air handler. Some are high-grade media filters with carbon. Others add electronic stages. When comparing them, ask what each stage removes and how it was tested.

Activated carbon adsorbs odors and many volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It's the right tool for smoke smell after a fire season, cooking odors and pets. Capacity depends on how much carbon there is. A thin carbon-sprayed filter fills up quickly, while a deep carbon bed lasts longer. Once carbon is saturated, it stops working, so it needs regular replacement.

PCO and ionization: read the fine print

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), bipolar ionization, "plasma" and similar electronic air cleaners are marketed heavily, often with lab kill rates for viruses and odors. Here's what to know before buying:

Caveats on electronic air cleaners

  • California limits ozone. Since 2010, indoor air cleaners sold in California must be certified by CARB to emit no more than 0.050 ppm of ozone. That includes ionizers, electrostatic precipitators and PCO devices, and since 2022, electronic units installed in the ductwork. Look for "CARB Certified" on the packaging or the model on CARB's list.
  • Ozone generators are not purifiers. Devices that make ozone on purpose are not legal to sell in California as air cleaners. Ozone irritates the lungs, and CARB warns consumers against them.
  • Byproducts. PCO and ionization can create other chemicals, such as formaldehyde, when they only partly break down pollutants. Results vary by product and conditions.
  • Lab numbers aren't your living room. A kill rate measured in a small test chamber says little about a whole house with air constantly moving. Ask for independent testing in real-world conditions.
  • Mechanical filtration-only devices, and portable UV units whose lamps make no measurable ozone, are exempt from CARB's ozone test. They still require CARB electrical safety certification.

We don't recommend any device that emits ozone. If an electronic purifier fits your situation, we'll help you confirm that the exact model meets CARB's limit.

Humidity control in the Sacramento Valley

Humidity affects comfort, dust mites, mold and how dry your skin and sinuses feel. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50%, and below 60% to limit mold.

  • Summer: Sacramento air is usually dry, and air conditioning removes more moisture. High indoor humidity in summer usually points to a specific problem, such as a damp crawlspace, a leak or an oversized AC that short-cycles.
  • Winter: Heated indoor air can get dry, especially with a furnace running on cold mornings. Some homes benefit from a whole-home humidifier. Others just need fewer air leaks.
  • Musty smells from the system often come from a wet coil, a clogged condensate drain or standing water in the pan. Fixing the drain and adding a UV coil light often solves it.

An inexpensive hygrometer tells you where your home actually sits before you buy any equipment.

Allergies and valley pollen

The Sacramento Valley has a long pollen season, with tree pollen in late winter and spring, grasses in spring and early summer and weeds into fall. Pollen grains are large particles. A well-fitted MERV 11 to 13 filter captures most of them, and that does more for allergy sufferers than any electronic purifier. Keep windows closed on high-pollen days, run the fan to keep air moving through the filter and see air filtration for options.

Smoke odors after fire season

After days of wildfire smoke, homes can smell of smoke long after the AQI recovers. Odor comes from gases and residue on surfaces, not just particles in the air.

  • Replace the HVAC filter once the smoke clears.
  • Use activated carbon, in the HVAC system or in portable units, to pull odor from the air.
  • Clean soft surfaces and air the house out when outdoor air is clean again.
  • If ash or soot got into the ducts, consider duct cleaning.

What does air purification cost?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Technology. A UV coil light costs less than a multi-stage purifier.
  • Installation location. Attic air handlers take more time than garage furnaces. Lights also need power wired to them.
  • Carbon capacity. Deeper carbon beds cost more up front but last longer.
  • Ongoing parts. UV lamps, carbon and cells need periodic replacement.
  • Related fixes. Coil cleaning, drain repair or a filter upgrade may come first.

What we look at before recommending purification

  • Your main concern: odors, allergies, mold, germs or smoke
  • Current filter type, fit and MERV rating
  • Coil, drain pan and condensate line condition
  • Indoor humidity readings
  • Return air leaks that pull in attic or garage air, which duct sealing fixes
  • CARB certification of any electronic device you're considering

Where we install air purification

We install UV lights, carbon systems and whole-home purifiers throughout Sacramento and nearby communities, including Carmichael, Granite Bay, West Sacramento and Placerville.

Air purification FAQ

Are whole-home air purifiers worth it?

They can be for specific problems, such as odors, a coil that keeps growing mold or chemical sensitivities. For dust, pollen and smoke particles, a MERV 13 filter that fits properly usually does more for less money. Start with filtration, then add purification for what's left.

Do UV lights in HVAC systems work?

UV-C coil lights work well at keeping the cooling coil and drain pan free of mold and biofilm, because they shine on those surfaces all the time. Lights meant to kill germs in moving air have much shorter exposure and more modest results.

Are ionizers legal in California?

Yes, if the model is certified by CARB. Since 2010, indoor air cleaners sold in California, including ionizers and PCO units, must emit no more than 0.050 ppm of ozone. Ozone generators marketed as air purifiers do not qualify.

What removes smoke smell from a house?

Activated carbon removes odor gases from the air, and cleaning surfaces removes residue. A standard HVAC filter captures smoke particles but not the smell. Replace the filter after a smoke event as well.

What humidity should my Sacramento home be?

The EPA recommends 30% to 50% indoor relative humidity, and below 60% to limit mold. Sacramento homes are usually dry in summer and can be dry indoors in winter too, so measure before buying a humidifier or dehumidifier.

Will an air purifier help my allergies?

For pollen, dander and dust allergies, better filtration helps most because those are particles. Purification adds little for particle allergies but can help with mold growth in the system and with odors.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
