Heating & Air Conditioning in Galt, CA

Galt sits on the valley floor at the south edge of Sacramento County, with long summer heat and foggy, frosty winters. We service and replace the systems that have to handle both.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC contractor that repairs, maintains and replaces air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps and ductwork for homes and businesses in Galt, California. We are licensed under CSLB #956515 (C-20), our technicians are NATE-certified, and we run 24/7 emergency service.

Galt is a SMUD town for electricity and a PG&E town for natural gas, and permits inside city limits come from the City of Galt Building Division. Just outside town, the rules can change, because Galt is bordered by unincorporated land in both Sacramento and San Joaquin counties.

A town at the county line

Galt is the southernmost city in Sacramento County. Its electricity comes from SMUD, which runs a substation right in the middle of town on A Street. That puts Galt homes in line for SMUD's heating and cooling rebates, including its incentives for replacing a gas furnace with an electric heat pump. At the time of writing (2026), SMUD pays these rebates through contractors in its Contractor Network. We've been a participating contractor since 2020, so we can take care of the paperwork on qualifying heating and cooling projects. Amounts and funding change, so we check the current program before we price a system.

The city itself is only about seven square miles. Plenty of homes with a Galt mailing address sit outside city limits, on ranch land toward Herald or across the line in San Joaquin County. That changes two things:

  • Who issues the permit. Inside city limits it is the City of Galt Building Division, part of the Community Development Department. In unincorporated Sacramento County it is the county's Building Permits and Inspection office. South of the county line it is San Joaquin County.
  • Who supplies electricity. SMUD serves Sacramento County. Rural homes across the San Joaquin line are generally PG&E customers, and Lodi has its own city electric utility. Your bill settles it, and it decides which rebates apply.

Whichever office it is, California requires a permit for an HVAC changeout, and Title 24 usually adds a HERS verification test, such as duct leakage testing, before the permit can close. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job.

Galt's two kinds of houses

Galt was laid out by the Central Pacific Railroad in 1869 and named by rancher John McFarland after his old hometown of Galt, Ontario. It stayed small for a long time. The town grew around the depot and the old Lincoln Highway, which ran through town on what is now Lincoln Way, and it didn't incorporate until 1946. Many of the original wood homes are still standing.

Then Highway 99 improvements made Galt an easy commute, and the town grew to the west and northeast. The 2020 census counted 25,383 residents. The result is a town with two very different housing stocks, and they need different approaches.

Older homes near downtown

Houses near Lincoln Way and the old downtown may have floor furnaces, wall heaters, window units or duct systems added decades after the house was built. For these, a ductless mini-split or a heat pump with new ductwork is often cleaner than patching an old setup.

Newer subdivisions west and northeast

Tract homes built during the growth years usually have a furnace in the garage or attic and flex ducts in the attic. As the original equipment ages, we see failing capacitors, dirty coils and duct joints that have pulled apart in the attic heat.

Built for 100°F afternoons and tule fog mornings

Galt sits low on the valley floor, close to where the Cosumnes River runs into the Mokelumne. Summers bring the same triple-digit heat as Sacramento, which averages about two dozen 100°F days a year. Winters bring tule fog, the dense ground fog that settles over the Central Valley on calm nights after rain, along with frosty mornings.

That combination affects equipment choices. On a foggy, near-freezing morning, a heat pump's outdoor coil collects frost and the system runs short defrost cycles. That is normal, and a correctly sized heat pump handles it fine. What matters is proper refrigerant charge, a clear outdoor unit and a thermostat set up for heat pump operation. If you keep a gas furnace instead, a furnace tune-up in the fall makes sense before the first cold, damp stretch.

Farm country air

Galt grew up on cattle, grain and, for most of the 20th century, dairying. Agriculture still surrounds the town. Spring pollen, dust from field work and summer harvest seasons all load air filters faster than you might expect, and leaky return ducts pull that dust in from the attic. Wildfire smoke drifting into the valley adds another layer some summers. We can fit a higher-grade media filter, seal return ducts, or add whole-home air filtration.

What we do for Galt homes

Before we quote a system in Galt, we check

  • Whether the address is in city limits, unincorporated Sacramento County or San Joaquin County
  • Whether your electric bill comes from SMUD or PG&E
  • What heating you have now: gas furnace, heat pump, wall heater or floor furnace
  • Duct condition and leakage, especially in older homes with added ducts
  • Whether your electrical panel can carry a heat pump

Galt heating and cooling FAQ

Who issues HVAC permits in Galt?

Inside Galt city limits, the City of Galt Building Division issues building permits and handles inspections. If your home is outside city limits, the permit comes from Sacramento County or, south of the county line, San Joaquin County. We confirm which applies and file it for you.

Is Galt on SMUD or PG&E?

Galt gets electricity from SMUD and natural gas from PG&E. Homes across the San Joaquin County line are generally on PG&E for electricity too, and Lodi has its own utility. Your bill tells you which one you have, and that decides which rebates you can use.

Will a heat pump keep my Galt house warm on foggy winter mornings?

Yes, if it's sized and charged correctly. On cold, damp mornings the outdoor coil frosts and the unit runs brief defrost cycles, which is normal. Galt rarely gets cold enough to overwhelm a modern heat pump.

My older Galt home has a floor furnace. What are my options?

Common choices are a ductless mini-split system, which needs no ductwork, or a heat pump or furnace with new ducts run through the attic or crawl space. We look at the layout and give you options with prices for each.

Why do my air filters get dirty so fast in Galt?

Galt is surrounded by working farmland, so pollen and field dust are part of the air most of the year. Leaky return ducts can also pull dust in from the attic. Sealing the returns and using a better filter usually helps.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
