AC repair means finding the specific part or condition that stopped your air conditioner from cooling and fixing it, usually in a single visit. In Sacramento, most summer breakdowns come down to a short list: a failed capacitor, a burned contactor, a refrigerant leak, a frozen indoor coil or an outdoor coil clogged with cottonwood fluff and leaves.

Airflow Heating & Air offers 24/7 emergency service across Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties. Our NATE-certified technicians test before they replace anything, and you get a clear price before the work starts.

Common AC failures in Sacramento

Sacramento air conditioners work hard. Since 1990 the city has averaged about 23 to 24 days a year at 100°F or hotter, and 2024 set a new record, passing the old mark of 44 days. Parts that are already weak tend to fail during those stretches, often on the hottest afternoon of the week.

What you noticeLikely causeWhat the repair involves
Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin, or the system starts then shuts offFailed run or start capacitor. Heat wears them out.Test the capacitor with a meter and replace it if it's out of spec. Check the fan motor and compressor while we're there.
Thermostat calls for cooling but the outdoor unit never startsPitted or burned contactor, a bad low-voltage wire, or ants packed in the contactorReplace the contactor, repair the wiring and check the thermostat signal.
Air from the vents is cool but not cold, and it gets worse over weeksRefrigerant leak, often at a coil, valve or flare fittingFind the leak, repair it, then charge and verify by measuring superheat and subcooling. Topping off without a repair just postpones the next call.

Safe checks to try before you call

A few problems have simple fixes. These checks are safe for any homeowner and can save you a service call.

  1. Check the thermostat. Make sure it's set to Cool, the set point is below room temperature and the screen isn't blank. Replace the batteries if it uses them.
  2. Check the breakers. Look for a tripped AC or furnace breaker in the main panel. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
  3. Check the filter. A clogged filter is the most common reason a coil freezes. Replace it if you can't see light through it.
  4. Thaw a frozen coil. If you see ice, set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On for a few hours. Running the AC on a frozen coil can damage the compressor.
  5. Clear the outdoor unit. Keep about two feet clear around it. Gently rinse cottonwood fluff and leaves off the fins with a garden hose, top to bottom, with the power off.
  6. Check the condensate switch. Some systems shut off when the drain backs up. If there's water in the pan or around the furnace, the drain is likely clogged.

Please don't open the electrical panel on the outdoor unit. Capacitors can hold a dangerous charge even with the power off.

Turn the system off and call right away if

  • You smell burning or see smoke from the outdoor unit, furnace or vents.
  • A breaker trips again after one reset.
  • The outdoor unit hums loudly but the fan or compressor won't start. Leaving it on can burn out the compressor.
  • You hear hissing or bubbling near the refrigerant lines.
  • Ice keeps coming back after you've thawed the coil and changed the filter.
  • Someone in the home is elderly, an infant or medically vulnerable to heat. During a heat wave, a hot house is an emergency. That's what our 24/7 emergency service is for.

Refrigerant: what Sacramento homeowners should know

Most systems installed between about 2010 and 2025 use R-410A. Those systems can be repaired and recharged for as long as they run. The federal phase-down limits how much new R-410A is produced, so the refrigerant may cost more over time, but it's still legal to buy and charge into existing equipment at the time of writing (2026).

Older systems that use R-22 are a different story. R-22 production ended in 2020, so only reclaimed supply remains and it's expensive. A large R-22 leak is usually the point where a replacement makes more sense than a repair.

New systems built since 2025 use A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. They need different tools and handling, so ask whether a technician is trained on A2L equipment if your system is new.

What does AC repair cost in Sacramento?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • The part. A capacitor or contactor is a small repair. A fan motor, coil or compressor is a major one.
  • Refrigerant. Leak searches take time, and the amount and type of refrigerant affect the total.
  • Access. Attic furnaces and coils in tight spaces take longer to work on.
  • Timing. An after-hours emergency call may be priced differently from a scheduled visit. Ask when you call.
  • Warranty status. Parts may be covered by the manufacturer if the system is registered and still in its warranty period.

How a repair visit works

  1. Call or book online. Tell us what you're seeing and hearing. Photos of the thermostat and outdoor unit help.
  2. Diagnosis. The technician checks power, controls, airflow and refrigerant, and tests the suspect parts with meters and gauges.
  3. Clear options and price. You hear what failed, why, and what it costs to fix before any work begins. If the system is near the end of its life, we'll say so.
  4. Repair. Most common repairs are done on the same visit when the part is on the truck.
  5. Verify. We run the system and measure temperatures and pressures to confirm it's cooling properly.

Repair or replace?

A capacitor or contactor on a 10-year-old system is an easy call: repair it. The decision gets harder with a failed compressor, a leaking coil or a system past 15 years old. A simple test: multiply the system's age by the repair price. If that number is larger than the price of a new system, replacement usually makes more sense. Our AC replacement page walks through the full math, including rebates and the refrigerant change.

If the cooling is fine but some rooms stay hot, the problem may be the ducts, not the AC. Crushed or disconnected attic ducts are common in older Sacramento homes. See air duct repair.

Preventing the next breakdown

Many summer failures show warning signs months earlier: a capacitor drifting out of spec, a contactor starting to pit, a coil packed with debris. A spring AC tune-up catches those before the first heat wave. Changing the filter regularly, especially during wildfire smoke season, prevents most frozen coils.

Where we repair air conditioners

We do AC repair throughout Sacramento and nearby communities, including Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Carmichael and Natomas, plus Placer, El Dorado and Yolo county towns.

AC repair FAQ

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes are a dirty filter, a frozen indoor coil, a failed outdoor fan capacitor or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and look for ice first. If the outdoor fan isn't spinning or the air is warm, turn the system off and call for service.

Do you offer emergency AC repair in Sacramento?

Yes. Airflow Heating & Air offers 24/7 emergency service. During heat waves, call as early as you can and tell us if anyone in the home is vulnerable to heat.

How long does a typical AC repair take?

Common repairs such as a capacitor, contactor or drain clog usually take under an hour or two once diagnosed. Leak repairs and part replacements like a fan motor take longer, and some parts must be ordered.

Is it worth recharging an AC that's low on refrigerant?

Only if the leak is found and fixed. An air conditioner is a sealed system, so low refrigerant always means a leak. Recharging without a repair means you'll likely be paying for refrigerant again next summer.

Why does my AC keep freezing up?

Ice forms when the indoor coil gets too cold, usually from low airflow (a dirty filter, closed vents, a weak blower or blocked ducts) or low refrigerant. Thaw it with the system off and fan on, change the filter, and call if it freezes again.

Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old AC?

For a small repair like a capacitor, repairing is reasonable. For a compressor or coil failure, or an R-22 system, get a replacement quote too. Multiply the age by the repair price, and if it exceeds the cost of a new system, replacing is usually the better value.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
