Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC contractor that repairs and installs furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps in Shingle Springs, including the rural parcels off the Highway 50 corridor where propane is a common heating fuel. We offer 24/7 emergency service, NATE-certified technicians and free estimates on new systems.

The most important local question is usually fuel. Outside the areas served by piped natural gas, many rural El Dorado County homes, including parts of Shingle Springs, heat with propane, and the area has been part of PG&E's Public Safety Power Shutoffs. Both facts change whether a propane furnace, an all-electric heat pump or a dual-fuel setup makes the most sense for you.

Power shutoffs and your heating plan

In October 2018, PG&E cut power to about 70,000 customers across the Sierra foothills ahead of a wind event, and Shingle Springs was on the list along with Placerville, Diamond Springs and Georgetown. Shutoffs like that tend to come in fall, when the weather is turning cold at night. A furnace still needs electricity to run its blower and controls, and a heat pump needs a lot more of it.

That doesn't rule out a heat pump. It means planning ahead. Here's how the common options compare for a Shingle Springs home.

Propane furnace with central AC

Familiar, strong heat on cold nights. A furnace blower draws modest power, so a properly connected backup generator can usually keep it running during an outage. The trade-off is buying propane and keeping the tank filled.

All-electric heat pump

One system heats and cools, and you can retire the propane tank for heating. At about 1,400 feet, winters are well within what modern heat pumps handle. Running one through a shutoff takes a much larger generator or a battery system, which belongs in the plan from day one.

Dual fuel

A heat pump does most of the work, and a propane furnace takes over on the coldest mornings. It can trim propane use without giving up the furnace as a fallback. We'll walk you through whether the extra equipment is worth it for your house.

Keeping wildfire smoke out of the house

The El Dorado County Air Quality Management District advises residents to stay inside with windows and doors closed and to use air purifiers when wildfire smoke drifts in, which happens most fire seasons from fires in the region and across the state. A closed-up house is only as clean as the air the system moves through it.

  • Filter upgrades. Many older returns only fit a thin filter. We can add a deeper media cabinet that catches fine particles without choking airflow. See our air filtration options.
  • Sealed ducts. Return ducts that leak in the attic or crawlspace pull outside air straight into the system. Sealing fixes that and also helps with the HERS duct test on a replacement.
  • Whole-home purification. Purifiers and UV lights add another layer for households with asthma or other sensitivities.

Before we quote a system in Shingle Springs, we check

  • Your heating fuel today: propane, natural gas, electric or wood
  • Whether you have, or plan to add, a generator or battery backup
  • Your electrical panel's capacity if you're considering a heat pump
  • Duct condition and leakage, ahead of the required HERS verification
  • Where the condenser can sit clear of oaks, brush and dry grass
  • Filter rack size and whether smoke filtration is a priority

HVAC services in Shingle Springs

A rural town on the Highway 50 corridor

Shingle Springs has had a post office since 1865, though from 1895 to 1955 it was officially named just "Shingle." The old town is California Historical Landmark #456, and the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians' Red Hawk Casino, opened in 2008, sits on Highway 50 nearby. Away from the highway, much of the area is larger residential parcels with oaks, pasture and long driveways.

Larger lots bring HVAC quirks: long line sets between the house and condenser, additions on separate branches, and detached shops or studios that never got heating or cooling. Those spaces are good candidates for a ductless mini-split. Permits come from El Dorado County, since Shingle Springs is unincorporated. California requires one for an HVAC changeout, and we file it and schedule the inspection.

Family-run, Sacramento-based

We come up Highway 50 from Sacramento to Shingle Springs. Call (916) 476-2222 any time, day or night, for emergency service, or request a free estimate on a new system.

Shingle Springs HVAC questions

Should I replace my propane furnace with a heat pump in Shingle Springs?

It depends on your propane costs, your electrical panel and how you want to handle power shutoffs. At about 1,400 feet, a modern heat pump can heat most homes through winter. Some homeowners keep the propane furnace as backup in a dual-fuel setup, which is worth comparing.

Will my furnace work during a PG&E power shutoff?

Not without backup power. Even a propane or gas furnace needs electricity for its blower, igniter and controls. A furnace draws far less than a heat pump, so a properly installed generator connection can often keep it running during a shutoff.

How can I keep wildfire smoke out of my house?

Keep windows and doors closed, as the El Dorado County air district advises, and run the system fan with a high-efficiency filter. Sealing leaky return ducts stops attic and crawlspace air from being pulled in. Portable or whole-home purifiers add more protection.

Who issues HVAC permits for Shingle Springs?

El Dorado County, because Shingle Springs is unincorporated. California requires a permit for replacing a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump, and Title 24 usually requires HERS verification. Airflow Heating & Air handles the paperwork and inspection scheduling.

Can you add heating and cooling to a detached shop or studio?

Yes. A ductless mini-split is often the simplest way to condition a detached building, since it needs no ductwork and runs on its own controls. We size it for the space and its insulation.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
