Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned Sacramento HVAC contractor, and Orangevale is one of the communities we work in most. We repair, maintain and replace air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps and ductwork for homes, multi-family buildings and light commercial spaces, with 24/7 emergency service.

Two local facts shape most jobs here. Orangevale is unincorporated, so HVAC permits come from Sacramento County rather than a city. And homes here buy electricity from SMUD, which at the time of writing (2026) pays rebates for switching from a gas furnace to an electric heat pump.

A local HVAC team that knows Orangevale

We work in Orangevale every week, so the town's mix of tract homes, newer infill and horse properties is familiar ground. When your AC quits on a July afternoon, call our 24/7 emergency line at (916) 476-2222.

Knowing the area also means knowing how the town fits together. Orangevale is a census-designated place of about 35,500 people (2020 Census) on rolling ground near the base of the Sierra foothills, next to Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks and Folsom. No state highway runs through it, so we get around on the same roads you do: Greenback Lane, Hazel Avenue, Oak Avenue and the side streets between them.

Orange groves, big lots and what they mean for your system

Orangevale started as a farm colony. In 1887 a group of Sacramento investors formed the Orange Vale Colonization Company to sell small agricultural parcels, and the first map was recorded with the county in May 1888. Citrus did well until a freeze in 1932 killed most of the orchards, and the colony slowly turned into the suburb it is today.

Some of that rural character survived. Parts of Orangevale are still zoned agricultural-residential (AR-2 and AR-5), with acreage, barns and horse pastures. Those properties raise HVAC questions a standard tract house doesn't:

  • Outbuildings. A barn office, tack room, workshop or guest unit is usually too far from the house to tie into the main ducts. A ductless mini-split heats and cools it on its own, with no ductwork to run.
  • Dust and hay. Arenas, pastures and dirt drives put fine dust in the air. A better filter and a well-sealed return keep it out of the indoor coil and out of your living room.
  • Room to place equipment. On a big lot the condenser can go somewhere shaded and away from the bedrooms, as long as the refrigerant line stays within the manufacturer's length limits.

Orangevale weather, season by season

Long runs of triple digits

Sacramento averages a few weeks of 100-degree days each summer, and in 2024 it set a record, passing the old mark of 44 days before the end of September. An AC that is undersized, low on refrigerant or fighting leaky attic ducts falls behind on those afternoons. We size replacements with a load calculation, not by copying the tonnage of the old unit.

No-burn days in winter

From November 1 through the end of February, the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District's Check Before You Burn program can restrict fireplaces and wood stoves when pollution is forecast to be high. On those days your furnace or heat pump carries the whole house, so it should be checked before November.

Gas furnace or heat pump

A common setup here is a PG&E gas furnace paired with an AC that runs on SMUD power. When both are getting old, a heat pump can replace them with a single outdoor unit that heats and cools, and SMUD currently rewards that switch.

SMUD heat pump rebates for Orangevale homes

SMUD raised its residential heat pump rebates in February 2026. At the time of writing (2026), it lists up to $3,000 for converting a gas HVAC system to an electric heat pump and $1,000 for replacing an existing electric system with a new heat pump. SMUD said the increase was meant to help make up for federal tax credits that expired on December 31, 2025, and state programs that ran out of money. Funding and eligibility can change, so we confirm the current rebate and program rules when we quote your system. Our SMUD heat pump rebate page explains how it works. Airflow has been a SMUD Participating Contractor since January 2020, so we can submit the rebate paperwork for qualifying heating and cooling projects. We go over what applies to your house when we quote a heat pump installation.

Heating and cooling work we do around Orangevale

Before we quote a system in Orangevale, we check

  • Whether your heat runs on PG&E gas, propane or electricity, and whether a heat pump makes sense
  • Whether the project qualifies for a SMUD rebate at the time of install
  • Duct leakage, since California's Energy Code usually requires a HERS test when a ducted system is replaced
  • Barns, shops, additions or converted garages the current system doesn't reach
  • Electrical panel capacity if you're moving from gas heat to all-electric
  • Where the outdoor unit can sit with shade, airflow and distance from bedrooms

Permits: Sacramento County, not a city hall

Because Orangevale has no city government, HVAC permits are issued by Sacramento County's Building Permits and Inspection division. County rules require a permit to replace a mechanical system, and changeouts at apartments and condos are reviewed for both mechanical and electrical work. Under California's Energy Code, replacing a ducted system usually also triggers a duct leakage test by an independent HERS rater. We pull the permit, schedule the test and meet the county inspector, so the paperwork is in order if you sell the house later.

Orangevale heating and air FAQ

Do you offer emergency HVAC service in Orangevale?

Yes. Call (916) 476-2222 any time, day or night, for no heat, no cooling or a water leak. We're a family-owned HVAC contractor and Orangevale is a regular part of our service area.

Who issues HVAC permits for an Orangevale home?

Orangevale is unincorporated, so permits come from Sacramento County's Building Permits and Inspection division. A replacement system normally also needs a HERS duct leakage test under California's Energy Code. We handle the permit, the test and the inspection as part of the job.

Does SMUD give a rebate for a heat pump in Orangevale?

At the time of writing (2026), SMUD lists up to $3,000 for converting gas heating to a heat pump and $1,000 for replacing an electric system with a new heat pump. Amounts and funding can change. We confirm what's available when we quote your system.

Can you heat and cool a barn or shop on my Orangevale property?

Usually, yes. A ductless mini-split is often the simplest option for an outbuilding because it needs no ductwork, just a line set and a dedicated circuit. We size it to the building and check that your panel can carry the extra load.

Can I rely on my fireplace instead of the furnace in winter?

Not every day. From November 1 through February, Sacramento County's Check Before You Burn program can restrict wood burning on high-pollution days. Your furnace or heat pump needs to be ready to heat the whole house, which is why a fall furnace tune-up is worth doing.

Do you charge for an estimate on a new system?

No. Estimates for new system installations are free, and financing is available for qualified customers.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
