Air duct repair fixes physically damaged ductwork, such as crushed, torn, kinked or disconnected runs, and replaces sections that are too far gone to save. In Sacramento most ducts sit in the attic, where summer heat, foot traffic and rodents do the damage. One disconnected run can dump cooled air into an attic that tops 130°F, all afternoon.

Airflow Heating & Air repairs and replaces residential and light commercial duct systems across the Sacramento region. If your ducts are intact but leaky, you may want duct sealing instead. If they are intact but dirty, see duct cleaning.

Signs your ducts need repair

  • One room never cools down. A back bedroom that stays 5 or more degrees warmer than the rest of the house often has a crushed or disconnected supply run.
  • Weak or no airflow at a register. Hold your hand to each vent. A dead register usually means the duct feeding it has come off its boot or collar.
  • The attic is cooler than it should be. If the attic feels like it's being air conditioned, it probably is.
  • Dust, insulation fibers or a musty smell from the vents. A torn return duct can pull attic dust and insulation into the system.
  • Scratching in the attic, droppings near ducts or chewed insulation. Roof rats and mice tear flex duct for nesting material.
  • Higher bills with no change in use. Lost air means the system runs longer to reach the thermostat setting.

Why ducts fail in Sacramento attics

Sacramento summers bring long runs of 100°F afternoons, and attic air gets much hotter than that. Ducts up there take years of heat cycling, and the materials wear out.

  • Flex duct sags and kinks. Flexible duct needs support every few feet. When straps fail or someone steps on it while storing boxes or running cable, it collapses and chokes airflow.
  • Connections let go. Old cloth duct tape dries out in attic heat. The joint at the plenum or register boot slowly pulls apart until the run falls off.
  • The outer jacket cracks. UV and heat make old plastic jackets brittle. Once the jacket and insulation tear, the inner liner is exposed and the duct loses its insulating value.
  • Rodent damage. Rats and mice chew through flex duct and nest in the insulation. Damaged runs often carry droppings and urine and usually need replacement, not patching.
  • Undersized or poorly laid-out systems. Many older homes had ducts added after the fact with long, twisting runs. Those rooms were never going to get enough air.

Government research shows how much is at stake. A U.S. Department of Energy-funded study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that ducts in attics and crawlspaces can lose 25% to 40% of the heating and cooling energy passing through them, from leaks plus heat moving through the duct walls.

Repair, seal or replace: which do you need?

OptionWhat it isWhen it fits
Spot repairReconnect, re-strap or replace one or a few damaged runs. Most of the system is in good shape and the problem is local, such as a fallen run or one crushed section.
Duct sealingTest for leakage, then seal leaks with mastic or an aerosol sealant. The ducts are intact but leaky. See duct sealing.
Partial replacementReplace a whole branch or the return side, often with a new plenum.Damage is concentrated in one area, such as rodent damage over half the attic.
Full duct replacementNew supply and return ducts, plenums and boots, designed and sized for the home.Ducts are old, brittle, undersized or widely damaged, or you're changing out the HVAC system anyway.

We inspect the whole system before recommending anything. A dead register is sometimes a five-minute reconnect, and sometimes the first sign that the whole system is past its useful life.

Duct replacement during a system changeout

If you're planning an AC replacement or a heat pump installation, look at the ducts at the same time. A new high-efficiency system connected to leaky, undersized ducts will not deliver its rated efficiency or comfort. Heat pumps in particular often need more airflow than the old AC was getting.

Replacing ducts during a changeout also means one permit, one set of inspections and one trip into the attic. When the ducts are 25 or more years old, they have often reached the end of their useful life too.

Title 24 rules for duct work in California

California's Energy Code (Title 24, Part 6) applies to duct work, not just equipment. At the time of writing (2026), the key points for homeowners are:

  • Permits. Replacing an HVAC system or altering the duct system generally needs a building permit from the City of Sacramento, Sacramento County or your city.
  • The 25-foot trigger. Since the 2022 code cycle, and still under the 2025 code, adding or replacing more than 25 feet of duct (down from 40 feet in the 2019 code) triggers the duct sealing and insulation requirements.
  • Leakage testing. Altered and new duct systems must pass a duct leakage test verified by an independent HERS rater. Limits are tighter for an entirely new duct system than for an altered existing one.
  • Insulation. Sacramento is in California Climate Zone 12. New ducts in an unconditioned attic need R-8 insulation there under the current prescriptive rules.

Your HERS rater and building department confirm the exact requirements for your permit. We plan the job around those requirements from the start.

Older homes: asbestos on duct joints

Before anyone touches old ducts

  • Homes built or re-ducted before about 1980 may have asbestos. It shows up in the white or gray cloth or paper tape on metal duct seams, and sometimes in duct wrap or plenum insulation.
  • You can't tell by looking. Only a lab test of a sample confirms it.
  • Intact material is lower risk. Damaged or disturbed material is the hazard. Don't scrape, cut, sand or pull suspect tape.
  • Test first. If our technician sees suspect material, we stop and recommend testing. If it's positive, a licensed asbestos abatement contractor handles removal or encapsulation before duct work continues.

What does duct repair cost?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Scope. Reconnecting one run costs far less than replacing a branch or the full system.
  • Access. Low-pitch attics, tight crawlspaces and heavy insulation slow the work.
  • Rodent cleanup. Contaminated runs and insulation have to come out and be bagged.
  • Code triggers. Work over the 25-foot threshold adds a permit and HERS testing.
  • Design changes. Adding returns or resizing runs for a new heat pump adds materials and labor.
  • Asbestos. Testing and abatement, if needed, are a separate cost.

How duct repair works

  1. Inspection. We check airflow at each register, then go into the attic or crawlspace to trace every run, connection and plenum.
  2. Findings with photos. You see what we found: disconnected runs, crushed sections, rodent damage, suspect materials.
  3. Options and price. Spot repair, partial or full replacement, with the code requirements that apply to each.
  4. Permit. When the scope triggers one, the permit is filed before work starts.
  5. Repair or replacement. New runs are sized, supported off the attic floor where possible, connected with proper collars and sealed with mastic or listed tape.
  6. Testing and sign-off. Airflow is checked at the registers. When required, the HERS rater tests duct leakage and the inspector closes the permit.

What we check on every duct repair visit

  • Every supply and return connection, including plenums and register boots
  • Duct support, sagging and kinks
  • Jacket and insulation condition
  • Signs of rodents, moisture or contamination
  • Return air size compared with the equipment
  • Filter condition and fit

Where we repair ductwork

We repair and replace ducts throughout Sacramento and nearby communities, including Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Folsom and Roseville, plus Placer, El Dorado and Yolo county communities.

Air duct repair FAQ

How do I know if my air ducts are damaged?

Common signs are one room that stays much warmer than the rest, a register with weak or no airflow, dust or insulation blowing from vents and a noticeably cool attic in summer. A technician can confirm it by checking airflow at each register and inspecting the runs in the attic or crawlspace.

Should I repair or replace my ductwork?

Repair makes sense when the system is mostly sound and the damage is limited to a few runs. Replacement makes sense when ducts are brittle, widely damaged by rodents, undersized for your equipment or 25 or more years old. Replacing ducts during an HVAC changeout saves a second permit and attic trip.

Do I need a permit to replace ducts in Sacramento?

Generally yes when you replace the duct system or alter it beyond small repairs. Under California's Energy Code, adding or replacing more than 25 feet of duct also triggers duct sealing, insulation and a HERS-verified leakage test.

How long does duct replacement take?

A spot repair is usually done in a single visit. Replacing the full duct system in a typical single-story home often takes one to two days, plus the time to schedule the HERS test and final inspection.

Can rodent-damaged ducts be patched?

Small, clean tears can sometimes be repaired. Runs with nesting, droppings or urine should be replaced, because the contamination is inside the insulation where it can't be cleaned. Seal rodent entry points first or the damage will come back.

Is the tape on my old ducts asbestos?

It might be if the home or its ducts date from before about 1980. Only a lab test can tell. Leave it alone until it's tested, and use a licensed asbestos professional if it comes back positive.

What's the difference between duct repair and duct sealing?

Repair fixes physical damage: crushed, torn or disconnected ducts. Sealing closes the many small leaks in ducts that are otherwise intact, and it starts with a leakage test. Many homes need some of both.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
