AC, Heating & Heat Pump Service in Fairfield, CA

Fairfield gets marine wind off the Carquinez Strait most summer afternoons and valley heat when that wind quits. We size systems for both, handle the city or county permit, and work on homes, rentals and small commercial buildings.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned, Sacramento-area HVAC contractor that repairs, maintains and installs air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, ductless systems and ductwork in Fairfield, CA, the Solano County seat. We serve Fairfield from Cordelia and Green Valley across to the neighborhoods near Travis Air Force Base, under CSLB License #956515 (C-20), with NATE-certified technicians and 24/7 emergency service.

Fairfield had 119,881 residents in the 2020 Census, and its housing runs from older central tracts to hillside homes on the west side and a steady flow of military rentals. What ties them together is the weather. On most summer afternoons a strong westerly wind takes the edge off the heat. On the days it fails, Fairfield gets valley-hot.

Where Bay wind meets valley heat

Fairfield sits in the gap between the Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley. According to the Bay Area Air District, during summer and fall the heat in the Central Valley pulls marine air east through the Carquinez Strait almost every day, and afternoon westerly winds are common in southern Solano County.

The wind does not always show up. During the early September 2022 heat wave, Fairfield reached 117°F on September 5, beating its previous all-time high of 114°F. NOAA's 1971 to 2000 normals for the Fairfield station put average January lows in the upper 30s. A system here has to cover both ends, and it has to survive the wind itself.

  • Size for the hot outlier, not the breezy average. A load calculation tells us what your house actually needs on a design day.
  • Think about where the condenser sits. Steady wind drives dry grass, leaves and dust into outdoor coils, especially on lots that back onto open hillsides. A spring AC tune-up with a coil rinse helps.
  • Seal the windward side. Wind pushes outdoor air through gaps around duct boots, attic hatches and returns. Sealing those leaks keeps rooms on the west side from running colder in winter and dustier all year.

Fairfield neighborhoods and the systems we find in them

Captain Robert Waterman laid out Fairfield in 1856 and the city incorporated in 1903, but very little of today's housing is that old. Most of Fairfield's growth followed the air base. Census-based housing data puts the 1970s and 1980s as the two largest building decades, which means many original furnaces and air conditioners have already been replaced at least once, while the ductwork has not.

Central Fairfield tract homes

Single-story and two-story houses from the 1970s and 1980s make up much of the city. We often find second-generation equipment hooked to original attic ducts with brittle tape and kinked flex. When a room never cools, duct repair usually does more than a larger condenser.

Cordelia, Green Valley and the golf-course areas

Cordelia, named for Waterman's wife, anchors the city's west side. Nearby, Green Valley and golf-course neighborhoods such as Rancho Solano and Paradise Valley hold larger hillside homes. Larger homes here often carry two systems or zoned ducts, and we treat each one separately.

Travis households and rentals

Travis Air Force Base was annexed to Fairfield in 1966. On-base housing stays full, and base leaders have asked the state for help housing personnel in nearby communities, so many military families rent off base. We work with landlords and property managers to keep rental units heating and cooling between tenants.

Wildfire smoke and winter wood smoke

The hills on Fairfield's north and west edges are the reason indoor air quality matters here. On August 19, 2020, the LNU Lightning Complex fire jumped Interstate 80 near Cherry Glen Road. Fairfield police ordered evacuations for Paradise Valley, Green Valley Highlands, Rancho Solano and Rolling Hills, and Travis evacuated its non-mission-essential personnel and their families. Filtration is easier to plan before the next one.

Winter brings a different problem. Fairfield is in the Bay Area Air District, which notes that easterly winter winds can carry pollution from the Central Valley into Solano County. From November through February, the district can call Winter Spare the Air alerts, and burning wood indoors or out is illegal on those days. An open-hearth fireplace does not qualify for an exemption. If a fireplace is your backup heat, a working furnace or heat pump is the plan for alert nights.

HVAC services for Fairfield homes

Permits: City of Fairfield or Solano County

Replacing a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump in California needs a permit, and the Title 24 energy code usually calls for HERS verification, such as a duct leakage test, before the job is closed. Inside city limits, the permit comes from the City of Fairfield Building Safety Division. In April 2025 the city moved its permitting to a new online system called Fairfield BUILD, which replaced the TRAKiT portal it had used since 2014.

Not every Fairfield mailing address is inside the city. Parts of Green Valley and Suisun Valley are unincorporated Solano County, and those permits go to the county's Department of Resource Management, Building & Safety Services, which takes applications through its own online portal. The county lists the 2025 California Mechanical Code as the code in effect. We confirm the jurisdiction from the parcel, file with the right office, schedule the inspection and set up the HERS test.

Electricity from MCE, gas from PG&E

Since April 2022, MCE has been the default electricity generation provider in Fairfield, and unincorporated Solano County joined MCE in 2020. PG&E still delivers the power, sends the bill and provides natural gas. Your rate plan matters when we compare a heat pump against a gas furnace, so bring a recent bill to the estimate.

A note on incentives: the federal 25C energy efficiency tax credit ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. Utility and regional rebates open and close throughout the year, so we check which programs are taking applications when we prepare your quote rather than counting on one in advance. Financing is available for qualified customers.

Before we quote a system in Fairfield, we check

  • Whether the parcel is inside Fairfield city limits or in unincorporated Solano County
  • A room-by-room load calculation that accounts for both the breezy average and the hot outlier
  • Where the outdoor unit sits relative to wind, open hillside and debris
  • Duct leakage and airflow, since a HERS test is likely
  • For rentals, tenant access and how quickly the unit has to be back in service

Fairfield HVAC questions

Who issues HVAC permits in Fairfield?

Inside city limits, the City of Fairfield Building Safety Division, through its Fairfield BUILD online system. Addresses in unincorporated areas such as parts of Green Valley and Suisun Valley go through Solano County's Department of Resource Management. We check the parcel and pull the permit as part of the job.

Fairfield is usually breezy. Do I still need a full-size AC?

Usually yes. The westerly wind keeps many afternoons comfortable, but it can stall during heat waves, and Fairfield reached 117°F in September 2022. A load calculation shows what your house needs on a hot day without oversizing it for the rest of the summer.

Is Fairfield served by PG&E or MCE?

Both. MCE has supplied electricity generation by default since April 2022, while PG&E delivers the power, handles billing and provides natural gas. You can opt out of MCE and keep PG&E generation if you prefer.

Can I use my fireplace instead of fixing the furnace?

Not on Winter Spare the Air alert days. Fairfield is in the Bay Area Air District, which bans wood burning during those alerts from November through February, and open-hearth fireplaces do not qualify for an exemption.

Do you work on rentals near Travis Air Force Base?

Yes. We repair and replace systems in single-family rentals, apartments and light commercial buildings, and we can coordinate access with tenants and property managers.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
