Heating & Air Conditioning in Rocklin, CA

From the old quarry town to Whitney Ranch, Rocklin homes are built on granite slopes and often go two stories up. That shapes how we size, duct and zone a system.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned Sacramento-area HVAC contractor that installs, repairs and maintains air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps and ductwork for homes and light commercial buildings in Rocklin. Our technicians are NATE-certified, and we answer emergency calls 24/7.

Two things set Rocklin apart. Much of the city is built on granite hillsides, with plenty of two-story homes where the upstairs runs several degrees warmer than the ground floor. And Rocklin is PG&E territory for both gas and electricity, which shapes the math on any switch to a heat pump.

CSLB #956515 PG&E gas & electric City of Rocklin permits NATE-certified

A town named for its rock

Rocklin's quarries supplied granite for the Central Pacific Railroad in the 1860s, and Capitol Quarry opened in 1865 to cut stone for the State Capitol. When Southern Pacific moved its roundhouse to Roseville in 1908, one reason given was room to expand without Rocklin's granite topography. The same ground still affects homes today.

Split levels and stepped lots

Houses on sloped lots often have long duct runs, crawlspaces on one side and attic runs on the other. Airflow can be uneven from room to room, so we measure static pressure before blaming the equipment.

Tight side yards

On hillside lots the condenser often sits in a narrow side yard against a retaining wall. A bigger unit may not fit, and poor clearance shortens equipment life. We check the pad and spacing before quoting a new size.

Rocklin's older neighborhoods

Rocklin's Sunset Whitney area dates to the late 1950s and early 1960s housing boom. Homes from that era often have original duct runs and furnaces moved or added over the decades.

Why upstairs rooms in Rocklin run hot

Rocklin grew fast from the 1980s on, first with the 3,000-acre Stanford Ranch master plan and later the roughly 1,300-acre Whitney Ranch area in northwest Rocklin. Plenty of the homes from these decades are two stories with one system, one thermostat downstairs and ducts to the second floor running through a hot attic. On a 100-degree afternoon the downstairs thermostat is satisfied while bedrooms upstairs are still warm.

There are a few honest fixes, from cheapest to most involved:

  • Balance and seal what you have. Leaky or crushed upstairs ducts are common. Duct repair and adjusting dampers can close part of the gap for little money.
  • Add zoning. A zoning system puts a thermostat on each floor and motorized dampers in the ducts, so the system sends air where it is needed.
  • Add a ductless head. For a bonus room over the garage, a single ductless mini-split often works better than trying to push more air up a long duct.
  • Two systems. In larger homes, a separate upstairs system can be the right answer, especially when the original unit is due for replacement anyway.

PG&E territory: what it means for a heat pump in Rocklin

Unlike neighboring Roseville, Rocklin is not served by a city-owned utility. Rocklin is a founding member of Pioneer Community Energy, so most homes get their electricity generation from Pioneer unless they opted out, while PG&E delivers the power, sends the bill and supplies gas. The city studied its options and a consultant's report recommended staying with PG&E and Pioneer, so that will not change soon.

For HVAC, that means there is no city-run rebate like Roseville Electric's. The statewide TECH Clean California heat pump incentives for single-family homes were fully reserved in PG&E's area at the time of writing (2026), so check techcleanca.com for any reopening, and ask PG&E about income-qualified programs. Without a big rebate, a heat pump in Rocklin makes the most sense when the AC is already due for replacement, so you pay for one outdoor unit that both heats and cools. Pairing a heat pump with your existing gas furnace is another option we price out.

Before we quote a system in Rocklin, we check

  • The temperature difference between floors, and where the thermostat sits
  • Duct routes on sloped lots, including crawlspace and attic sections
  • Side-yard clearance around the condenser pad and any retaining walls
  • Panel capacity, if you are weighing a heat pump against a new gas furnace
  • What the City of Rocklin permit and HERS testing will need for your scope

HVAC services we provide in Rocklin

The Rocklin permit, start to finish

The City of Rocklin Building Division requires a building permit to replace an HVAC system. Licensed contractors can apply for a residential HVAC replacement permit through the city's eTrakit system. The application includes the Title 24 CF-1R-ALT energy form, and jobs valued over $1,000 also need the city's smoke and carbon monoxide alarm form. After the install, the city inspects, and a HERS rater verifies items like duct leakage. We handle each step and tell you when to expect the inspector.

Local to Placer County

Rocklin heating and cooling FAQ

How do I fix a hot upstairs in my Rocklin two-story?

Start by having the ducts to the second floor inspected, since leaks and crushed runs in the attic are common. If the ducts are sound, zoning with a thermostat on each floor or a ductless unit for the hottest room usually solves it. A second system is the bigger fix for large homes.

Is Rocklin served by PG&E or Roseville Electric?

Rocklin is PG&E territory for electric delivery and natural gas. Roseville Electric serves only the City of Roseville. Rocklin is a member of Pioneer Community Energy, so your generation charges likely come from Pioneer unless you opted out, while PG&E still delivers the power.

Do I need a permit to replace a furnace or AC in Rocklin?

Yes. The City of Rocklin requires a building permit for HVAC replacement, with a Title 24 energy compliance form. Most changeouts also need HERS verification before the permit is closed. We pull the permit through the city's eTrakit system as part of the job.

Are there heat pump rebates for Rocklin homeowners?

Options are limited right now. TECH Clean California's single-family heat pump funds in PG&E's area were fully reserved at the time of writing (2026), and Rocklin has no city utility rebate. Income-qualified households should ask PG&E about its assistance programs, and we can tell you if a new incentive opens.

Can a bigger AC fix uneven temperatures in my house?

Usually not. An oversized unit cools the downstairs fast, shuts off and leaves the upstairs warm and humid. Fixing airflow, adding zoning or adding a ductless head targets the actual problem.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
