Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC contractor that services, repairs and replaces air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps for homes and light commercial buildings in Woodland, CA. We hold CSLB License #956515, our technicians are NATE-certified, and we offer 24/7 emergency service.

Woodland is the Yolo County seat, a city of about 61,000 people at the 2020 census, and a farm town at heart, ringed by fields and a tomato cannery. That shapes the work here: harvest dust that clogs filters and coils, an older housing stock near downtown, and newer two-story homes on the southeast side. Your electricity likely comes from Valley Clean Energy, with PG&E delivering it and supplying gas.

CSLB #956515 City of Woodland & Yolo County permits Valley Clean Energy area Yolo-Solano AQMD 24/7 emergency service

Harvest season is filter season in Woodland

Woodland is surrounded by farmland, and processing tomatoes are Yolo County's top crop. The local cannery runs roughly July through October, and the harvest brings field work and dust close to town in the same months that July highs average in the mid-90s. That dust lands on outdoor coils and gets pulled into return grilles. A system that runs hard all summer pulls in a lot of it.

Clogged condenser coils

A dusty coil can't shed heat, so the AC runs longer and draws more power on the hottest afternoons. Rinsing the coil during an AC tune-up before summer, and checking it again after harvest, keeps capacity up.

Filters that load up fast

A thin 1-inch filter can choke in weeks during harvest. A deeper media filter cabinet holds more dust with less airflow restriction and needs changing less often.

Smoke and winter air

Woodland is in the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District. Wildfire smoke drifts in during summer, and from November through February the district issues voluntary "Don't Light Tonight" wood-burning advisories.

If anyone in the house has allergies or asthma, a whole-home air purifier or UV light paired with sealed ducts does more than any portable unit. Leaky return ducts in a garage or attic pull in dust that the filter never sees.

Woodland houses, from downtown to Spring Lake

Older homes near Main Street

The blocks around downtown and the 1896 Woodland Opera House include Victorian and early 1900s houses alongside mid-century homes. Some of them open each September for the Stroll Through History home tour. Many were built before central air existed. Ducts were added later, often undersized and run through tight attics or crawlspaces. For these homes we look hard at whether the existing ducts can carry a modern system. When they can't, ductless mini-splits avoid opening plaster walls or altering original trim.

Post-war and 1970s through 1990s neighborhoods

Many Woodland neighborhoods from these decades are single-story tract homes with a furnace in the garage or hall closet and ducts in the attic. Plenty of them are on their second or third AC by now. When we replace one, we test the ducts, because California's Title 24 code usually requires HERS duct leakage verification on a changeout.

Spring Lake and newer construction

Spring Lake, the master-planned area on the southeast side south of Gibson Road, is where much of Woodland's newer construction sits. In newer two-story homes, hot upstairs bedrooms are the most common complaint. Homes built under California's 2022 and 2025 Energy Codes are also more likely to have a heat pump from the start. Those need a technician who knows heat pump defrost and reversing valves, not just gas furnaces.

Farmhouses and rural properties

Outside city limits, toward Knights Landing, Yolo or Esparto, homes may sit far from a gas main and run on propane or all-electric heat. For a propane home, a heat pump can cut fuel deliveries. We'll compare running costs using your actual propane and electric bills.

What Valley Clean Energy means for a heat pump in Woodland

Valley Clean Energy, the local power agency formed by Yolo County and the cities of Woodland and Davis, has supplied electricity in Woodland since June 2018. PG&E still owns the lines, reads the meter, sends the bill and supplies natural gas. When you compare a heat pump to a new gas furnace, the electricity side of that math runs on VCE generation rates plus PG&E delivery charges.

A heat pump tends to win when the AC and furnace are both near the end, the panel has spare capacity, and the home is reasonably tight. A new gas furnace often wins when the AC is still young. Incentive programs in PG&E territory open and close, so we check what is available at the time of your quote rather than counting on one. The City of Woodland's Community Choice Energy page explains how VCE service works.

Permits: city or county?

Every furnace, AC or heat pump replacement in California needs a permit. Addresses inside Woodland city limits are permitted through the City of Woodland's Building Division. Homes in the unincorporated area around town are permitted by Yolo County. We confirm which office covers your parcel, file the permit, schedule the inspection and arrange the HERS test.

Before we quote a system in Woodland, we check

  • Whether your parcel is permitted by the City of Woodland or Yolo County
  • Duct size and leakage in older homes where ducts were added later
  • Coil and filter condition, and how much field dust reaches the unit
  • Your fuel: natural gas, propane or all-electric
  • Panel capacity and your VCE and PG&E bills if a heat pump is an option

Common questions from Woodland homeowners

How often should I change my furnace filter in Woodland?

Check a standard 1-inch filter every month in summer and change it when it looks gray, especially during harvest. A 4- or 5-inch media filter usually lasts several months. If you live near active fields, plan on more frequent changes than the package suggests.

Who sells my electricity in Woodland, VCE or PG&E?

Most Woodland homes get their electricity generation from Valley Clean Energy, which began service in June 2018. PG&E delivers the power, sends the bill and supplies natural gas. Both parts affect the running cost of a heat pump.

Can my older downtown Woodland home get central air?

Often, yes, but it depends on the existing ducts and attic space. If ducts would be too small or hard to route, ductless mini-splits can cool and heat the house without major wall work. We'll inspect and give you both options.

Do I need a permit to replace a furnace in Woodland?

Yes. Inside city limits the City of Woodland issues it, and outside city limits Yolo County does. California's Title 24 code usually also requires a HERS duct leakage test. We handle the permit, inspection and test as part of the job.

Is a heat pump a good idea for a propane farmhouse near Woodland?

It often is, because propane tends to cost more per unit of heat than gas or a heat pump. A heat pump also replaces your AC. We compare your propane and electric bills and check the panel before recommending it.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
