Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC contractor that installs and repairs furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioners in Diamond Springs and the neighboring town of El Dorado, along the Highway 49 corridor south of Placerville. We provide 24/7 emergency service, NATE-certified technicians and free estimates on new systems.

At about 1,790 feet, Diamond Springs gets colder winter nights than the valley towns, and wood heat is still part of life in many foothill homes. If you're ready to retire an old wood stove or fireplace, the El Dorado County Air Quality Management District runs an incentive program that can help pay for a cleaner heat source.

CSLB #956515 Highway 49 corridor El Dorado County permits 24/7 emergency service

Retiring the wood stove: what the county offers

The El Dorado County AQMD's woodsmoke reduction program pays an incentive when a primary residence removes an old, uncertified wood stove, insert or fireplace. One option covers replacing it with a new certified wood or pellet stove. Another covers removing it and relying on an existing or newly installed electric, natural gas or propane furnace or appliance. At the time of writing (2026), the district also says it will cover the basic building permit if one is needed, and low-income households can qualify for more. Funding is first come, first served, so check the county's air quality incentives page for current amounts.

Get pre-approval first

The district requires an application and a site inspection before the old unit comes out. Remove it first and you can lose eligibility. Start that paperwork before we schedule an install.

Ask about heat pumps

The program's wording covers electric heating appliances. If you want to replace wood heat with a heat pump, confirm with AQMD that your specific system qualifies before you buy.

Plan the whole house

A wood stove heats one room hard and leaves the far bedrooms cold. A ducted heat pump or furnace, or ductless heads in the rooms the stove never reached, spreads heat more evenly.

Sizing for nights near 1,800 feet

Diamond Springs sits just below Placerville's elevation and roughly 500 feet above Cameron Park, high enough for frosty mornings through much of winter and hot afternoons in summer. A system here has to do both jobs well, and it has to be sized for the house, not guessed from the old unit's label.

  • Furnaces. Gas or propane furnaces remain a strong choice, especially if you rely on a generator during PG&E shutoffs. Diamond Springs was on PG&E's 2018 Public Safety Power Shutoff list for the foothills. A furnace draws far less power than a heat pump, which makes backup power simpler. See our furnace replacement service.
  • Heat pumps. Modern heat pumps keep working well below freezing, but output drops as it gets colder. We pick models by their rated capacity at low temperatures and add backup heat where the house needs it.
  • Dual fuel. A heat pump paired with a propane or gas furnace lets the heat pump carry mild days and the furnace take the coldest mornings.

A Gold Rush town that rebuilt in brick

Diamond Springs was settled in 1848 and named for its clear springs. It was a camp on the Carson emigrant trail and burned in 1856 and again in 1859, after which residents rebuilt in brick. Later, lumber, lime production and farming kept the town going, and Main Street is still Highway 49. Today it is a community of about 11,345 people, by the 2020 census, with homes ranging from older houses near the historic core to newer streets on the hillsides.

Older houses here can have ducts that were added after the fact, undersized returns, or heat that was never meant to reach every room. Newer homes tend to have attic ducts that just need sealing and a properly sized system. We look at which one you have before talking equipment.

Also serving El Dorado

The town of El Dorado, known in the Gold Rush as Mud Springs, sits just a couple of miles down Highway 49. Homes there range from older in-town houses to rural parcels on the surrounding hills, where propane and wood heat are often in the mix and a detached shop may need its own ductless mini-split. El Dorado is unincorporated too, so permits also come from the county.

Diamond Springs and El Dorado HVAC FAQ

Can I get help paying to replace my wood stove in Diamond Springs?

Yes. The El Dorado County Air Quality Management District offers an incentive for removing an old, uncertified wood stove, insert or fireplace from a primary residence and switching to a cleaner option, including an electric, gas or propane furnace or appliance. You must apply and get pre-approved before the old unit is removed. Amounts and funding change, so check with the district first.

Does the county wood stove program cover a heat pump?

The program covers electric heating appliances, but whether a specific heat pump qualifies is something to confirm with the AQMD before you buy. Airflow Heating & Air can give you the equipment details to include with your application.

Is a heat pump enough for winter in Diamond Springs?

A modern heat pump chosen for cold-weather performance can heat most Diamond Springs homes, which sit near 1,800 feet. Some owners keep a propane or gas furnace as backup for the coldest mornings and for power shutoffs. A load calculation tells us which setup fits your house.

Who issues HVAC permits in Diamond Springs and El Dorado?

El Dorado County, since both communities are unincorporated. California requires a permit to replace a furnace, AC or heat pump, and Title 24 usually requires HERS verification. We file the permit and schedule the inspection.

Can you add air conditioning to an older home that never had it?

Usually, yes. If the house has room for ducts in the attic or crawlspace, central AC or a heat pump is an option. If not, ductless mini-splits can cool and heat the main rooms without major construction.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
