A furnace tune-up is a once-a-year cleaning, adjustment and safety test, ideally in September through November, that catches worn parts and carbon monoxide risks before you need the heat. In Sacramento it covers the furnace's whole start-up sequence, the burners, the heat exchanger, the blower and the filter, plus a CO test.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned Sacramento HVAC contractor with NATE-certified technicians. We tune up gas and electric furnaces in homes, multi-family buildings and light commercial spaces across the Sacramento region.

Why a tune-up matters before the first cold snap

In Sacramento, the furnace sits idle from about March to November while the AC does the work. Dust settles on the burners and flame sensor. Capacitors and ignitors age in the heat, especially in attic installs. Then the first cold spell arrives, often with tule fog that keeps daytime highs low for days, and the furnace runs long cycles right away.

That first week of real cold is when the most furnaces fail, and when repair calls pile up across the region. A tune-up in early fall finds a cracked ignitor, a dirty flame sensor or a weak capacitor while it is still a scheduled fix and not a cold night without heat. If something has already failed, see furnace repair.

Our fall furnace tune-up checklist

What we check, clean and test

  • Carbon monoxide in the flue gas and at the supply registers
  • Heat exchanger inspection for cracks, rust and signs of overheating
  • Burner flame: color, shape and steadiness, and cleaning the burners if needed
  • Flame sensor cleaning and a check of its signal
  • Hot surface ignitor condition
  • Gas pressure at the valve, and gas connections checked for leaks
  • Inducer motor and pressure switch operation
  • High limit and rollout safety switches tested
  • Blower wheel and motor, with amp draw and capacitor readings
  • Temperature rise across the furnace, compared with the manufacturer's range
  • Vent pipe condition, slope and connections
  • Condensate trap and drain on high-efficiency furnaces
  • Electrical connections tightened, control board error history read
  • Filter checked and replaced if you have one on hand, or sized for you
  • Thermostat calibration and a full heating cycle from call to shutdown

At the end you get a plain summary: what we found, what we cleaned, and anything that needs attention now or soon. Nothing gets replaced without your OK.

Carbon monoxide testing and the heat exchanger

A gas furnace burns fuel inside a sealed heat exchanger and vents the exhaust outside. If the heat exchanger cracks or the vent is blocked or disconnected, carbon monoxide can reach your living space. CO has no color or smell.

That is why the safety part of a tune-up matters more than the cleaning. We measure CO with a combustion analyzer, watch how the flame behaves when the blower starts (a flame that wavers or lifts when the fan kicks on can point to a crack), and inspect the heat exchanger where it can be reached. On older furnaces we pay extra attention to the bends and seams where cracks usually start.

California law requires CO alarms in homes with gas appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage. They belong on every level and outside sleeping areas. A tune-up is a good reminder to test yours.

Filters: the part you can handle yourself

A clogged filter is the most common cause of furnace overheating and limit-switch trips. Check it monthly during heavy use and replace it when it looks gray. Sacramento's wildfire smoke seasons are also a reason to think about which filter you use.

Filter ratingWhat it catchesNotes
MERV 1 to 4Large dust and lintProtects the equipment, does little for air quality
MERV 8Dust, pollen, pet danderA good everyday choice for most systems
MERV 11Finer dust and some smoke particlesCheck that your system has enough filter area
MERV 13Most fine particles, including much of the smokeStrong choice for smoke season if the system can handle the airflow, often with a wider media filter

A higher MERV filter in an undersized filter slot can choke airflow and cause the very overheating you are trying to avoid. During the tune-up we can tell you what your system can handle. For media cabinets and upgrades, see air filtration.

Pair it with your AC tune-up

Sacramento systems work hard in both seasons, so most homes benefit from two visits a year:

  • Spring (March to May): an AC tune-up before the first 100°F days, covering the refrigerant circuit, coils, capacitor and condensate drain.
  • Fall (September to November): a furnace tune-up before the first cold snap, covering combustion, safety controls and CO.

The furnace blower also moves your cooled air in summer, so a fall visit that cleans and tests the blower helps the AC too. If you have a heat pump, the same outdoor unit heats and cools, so twice-yearly service is even more useful.

If the furnace is in the attic, plan the fall visit before the rains. Attic work is safer and faster on a dry, mild day than on a cold, wet one.

How a tune-up visit works

  1. Book a time. Early fall slots are easiest to get before the cold weather rush.
  2. Start with what you have noticed. Odd noises, smells, uneven rooms or error lights help us focus.
  3. Inspect and test. We run the furnace through a full cycle and work through the checklist.
  4. Clean and adjust. Flame sensor, burners, blower and connections as needed.
  5. Report and recommendations. You get findings in plain language, with prices for anything that needs repair.

What does a furnace tune-up cost?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Number of systems. Homes with two furnaces or a furnace and a separate zone need more time.
  • Access. Tight attic installs take longer than a closet or garage furnace.
  • Combined visits. Booking the furnace and AC together can cut a trip.
  • Parts. Filters, flame sensors and capacitors are extra if they need replacing.

Signs your furnace needs more than a tune-up

Call for service now if you notice

  • A CO alarm sounding, or headaches that ease when you leave home. Leave first, then call 911.
  • A yellow, floating or rolling burner flame
  • Soot around the furnace or vent pipe
  • The furnace starting and stopping every few minutes
  • Loud banging at ignition, or a squeal or grinding from the blower
  • A furnace older than about 15 to 20 years with repeat problems. See furnace replacement.

Where we tune up furnaces

Furnace tune-up FAQ

How often should I get a furnace tune-up in Sacramento?

Once a year, in early fall. Even though Sacramento winters are mild, the furnace sits idle for months and then runs hard in the first cold weeks. An annual check catches worn parts and safety problems before that happens.

What time of year should I get a furnace tune-up?

September through early November, before the first cold snap and the tule fog season. Scheduling is easier then, and attic work is more comfortable before the winter rains. A spring AC tune-up and a fall furnace tune-up keep both seasons covered.

Does a furnace tune-up include carbon monoxide testing?

Ours does. We measure CO in the flue and at the supply registers, check the burner flame and inspect the heat exchanger. You should still keep working CO alarms on every level of your home, as California law requires in homes with gas appliances.

How long does a furnace tune-up take?

Usually about an hour for one furnace in an accessible location. Attic installs, multiple systems or repairs found during the visit add time. We will tell you before doing any work beyond the tune-up.

Can I tune up my furnace myself?

You can and should change the filter, keep the area around the furnace clear and test your CO alarms. Testing combustion, gas pressure, safety switches and the heat exchanger takes training and instruments. Those are the parts of a tune-up that protect your family.

Does a new furnace need a tune-up?

Yes. Annual service keeps it running efficiently and catches small problems early. Many manufacturers also expect regular maintenance as a condition of their warranty, so check your warranty paperwork and keep your service records.

Get the furnace cleaned, tested and checked for carbon monoxide before the first cold snap. Ask about pairing it with your spring AC tune-up.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
