AC Repair & Heating Service in Penryn, CA

Penryn grew up around a granite quarry, and the rock is still part of every yard. We plan pads, line sets and duct runs around it, on lots from the Penryn Parkway to English Colony Way.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC contractor that repairs and replaces air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps in Penryn, California, the unincorporated Placer County community on I-80 between Loomis and Newcastle. We work across the Sacramento region, offer 24/7 emergency service, and give free estimates on new systems.

Two things shape most Penryn jobs. The ground is granite, the same stone the town was founded to quarry, so where the equipment sits and how lines get to it take planning. And Penryn has no town hall of its own. Your HVAC permit comes from Placer County, even though the Town of Loomis issues its own permits a few minutes away.

A town built on granite

Penryn started in late 1864, when Welsh immigrant Griffith Griffith opened a granite quarry on land leased from the Central Pacific Railroad. A rail siding was finished on February 6, 1865, and the first load of cut stone shipped within a week. In the 1870s the quarry employed as many as 200 to 250 men, and Penryn granite went into the State Capitol in Sacramento and the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. The old works is now Griffith Quarry Park and Museum, at Taylor Road and Rock Springs Road, a National Register site and California Historical Landmark No. 885.

The rock that built the Capitol is still under, and on top of, a lot of Penryn yards. That changes how we plan an install.

Setting the outdoor unit

Boulders and outcrops can leave few level spots near the house. We pick a pad location that stays clear for airflow and service, drains well and keeps the unit off bare rock that bakes in the afternoon sun.

Getting lines from here to there

Trenching for a new line set, gas line or circuit can hit rock a short way down. We look at the route before we quote, and sometimes running lines along the house or through the crawlspace beats digging.

Tight crawlspaces

Homes set on rocky ground can have shallow or uneven crawlspaces, which makes duct repair slow work. Checking access first keeps the quote honest.

Penryn's rural lots and what they ask of a system

By the mid-1890s fruit growing had overtaken quarrying here, helped by English families who came to this part of Placer County in the late 1880s to buy citrus and fruit ranches. English Colony Way still winds through Penryn's rural lots. Penryn stayed rural. The county's Horseshoe Bar/Penryn Community Plan, adopted in 1994 and amended in 2005, sets keeping the area a scenic, rural-residential community as a core goal. Lot minimums in the plan run from about 2.3 acres in Rural Residential areas up to 20 acres in Rural Estate areas. The 2020 Census counted 1,150 people in the Penryn census place.

  • Long runs. Larger custom homes often have equipment at one end and bedrooms at the other. Leaky or undersized ductwork on those runs is a common reason the far rooms stay warm on summer evenings.
  • Gas, or not. Penryn is in PG&E's service area for electricity, but a gas main doesn't reach every rural parcel. Some homes use propane or all-electric heat. We confirm what you have before pricing a furnace replacement or a heat pump.
  • The Penryn Parkway. The plan sets aside about 166 acres, called the Penryn Parkway, as a compact commercial core. We handle light commercial heating and cooling for businesses there as well as homes.

Your permit comes from Placer County

California requires a permit to replace a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump, and the state Energy Code usually adds HERS verification, such as a duct leakage test. Penryn is unincorporated, so the permit is issued by Placer County Building Services, part of the county's Community Development Resource Agency at 3091 County Center Drive in Auburn.

Licensed contractors can apply for HVAC permits through the county's online Accela portal. Since January 1, 2026, new applications fall under the 2025 California building code. Here is what that looks like on a Penryn job:

  • We file it. The permit goes in under our CSLB license before the old equipment comes out.
  • A HERS rater tests the work. When ducts are altered or the system is replaced, a third-party rater usually checks duct leakage and airflow.
  • The county inspects. A Placer County inspector signs off on the finished install.

HVAC services for Penryn properties

Before we quote a system in Penryn, we check

  • Rock, slope and drainage where the outdoor unit will sit
  • The route for line sets, gas piping and wiring, and whether trenching is practical
  • Your fuel: PG&E gas, propane or all-electric
  • Crawlspace and attic access for the ductwork
  • Duct length and leakage ahead of the HERS test

Penryn heating and air FAQ

Do I file my Penryn HVAC permit with Loomis or with Placer County?

With Placer County Building Services. Penryn is unincorporated, so it doesn't have a town building department the way neighboring Loomis does. The county takes contractor HVAC permits online, and we file the permit and book the inspection as part of the job.

My Penryn yard is full of granite. Can you still install a new AC or heat pump?

Yes. Rock mostly changes the plan, not the outcome. We look for a level, well-drained pad spot near the house and a line route that avoids hard digging, and we price that work into the quote up front.

Does my Penryn home have natural gas, or do I need propane?

It depends on the parcel. Penryn is in PG&E's service area, but gas mains don't reach every rural lot, so some homes use propane or electric heat. We confirm your fuel before recommending a furnace or heat pump, and PG&E can tell you whether a main runs near your property.

Why do the rooms at the far end of my Penryn house stay warm in summer?

On larger homes, long duct runs lose air through leaks and lose cooling through hot attics before they reach the last rooms. Sealing or resizing those ducts often fixes it without a bigger AC. Zoning is another option when one wing gets more sun.

Do you work on businesses in Penryn as well as homes?

Yes. Airflow Heating & Air handles residential, multi-family and light commercial heating and cooling, including shops and offices in the Penryn Parkway commercial area.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
