Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned Sacramento HVAC contractor that repairs, maintains and replaces air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps in Antelope, CA. We work on the single-family homes and apartments that make up most of this unincorporated community of about 48,700 people.

Two local facts shape almost every job here. Most of Antelope was built as a planned community starting in the late 1980s, so many original systems are at or past the end of their working life. And even though Roseville is about five miles away, Antelope is in Sacramento County: SMUD is your electric utility and Sacramento County issues the permit.

Antelope's first-generation systems are wearing out

Antelope has an old name and a young housing stock. The post office opened in 1877 on the Central Pacific line, but the town stayed small for a century. In 1973 a rail car of aircraft bombs exploded in the Roseville yard just to the north and damaged most of the homes in town. The Antelope you know today mostly started in the late 1980s, with subdivisions and apartment complexes filling in through the 1990s and 2000s.

That timing matters. A house finished in 1990 may be on its second air conditioner already. A house from the late 1990s may still have the original one, now more than 25 years old. Older units installed before 2010 often run on R-22, a refrigerant that hasn't been produced or imported in the U.S. since 2020, so even a simple leak repair can cost more than the system is worth.

Hot upstairs bedrooms

Many Antelope homes are two-story tract houses with one system and one thermostat downstairs. Heat rises, the upstairs ducts run through a hot attic, and bedrooms end up several degrees warmer. Zoning, a second thermostat or a ductless mini-split for one problem room can fix it.

Attic ducts that have shifted

Flex duct from the 1990s sags, kinks and pulls loose at the boots. A room that never cools right often has a disconnected run above it. We check before recommending a bigger unit, because more tonnage won't fix a duct that's blowing into the attic.

Apartments and rentals

Antelope has a lot of multi-family housing. We service condensers and furnaces for owners and managers, and we work with tenants' schedules when a unit goes down in summer.

On the county line, but not on Roseville's grid

Antelope's northern border is the Placer County line, and plenty of residents shop, work and go to school in Roseville. It's easy to assume the same rules apply. They don't.

  • Your utility is SMUD. Roseville Electric serves the city of Roseville. Antelope homes are in SMUD territory, so SMUD's rebates are the ones you can use. Natural gas for furnaces comes from PG&E.
  • Your permit comes from Sacramento County. Antelope is unincorporated, so mechanical permits are issued by Sacramento County Building Permits and Inspection, not the City of Roseville or Placer County. The county takes applications, fees and inspection requests through its online permit system.
  • Your air district is Sac Metro. The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District covers Antelope. Its Check Before You Burn season runs November 1 through the end of February, which is one reason some owners want reliable central heat instead of a fireplace.

California requires a permit when you replace an air conditioner, furnace or heat pump. Swapping the condenser, coil or furnace counts as an alteration under the state Energy Code, which usually means a duct leakage test verified by a HERS rater. We pull the county permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job.

Before we quote a system in Antelope, we check

  • Whether the house is one story or two, and how the upstairs is ducted
  • The age and refrigerant of the current outdoor unit
  • Duct condition in the attic, including loose boots and crushed runs
  • Whether your furnace is gas or the home is set up for a heat pump
  • Which SMUD rebate tier, if any, the new equipment would qualify for
  • Return air size, since many tract homes have one small central return

Heating and cooling services for Antelope homes

What replacing a system looks like in 2026

Two changes affect Antelope homeowners shopping for a new system this year. First, manufacturers stopped producing new residential AC and heat pump systems with R-410A at the start of 2025. New equipment uses lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, so a new outdoor unit usually means new matching indoor coil too. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired.

Second, federal tax credits for heat pumps ended on December 31, 2025. In February 2026, SMUD raised its heat pump rebates to help make up the difference. At the time of writing (2026), the largest HVAC rebate is for switching from gas heat to an electric heat pump. SMUD pays these rebates through contractors in its Contractor Network. As a participating contractor since 2020, we can file the rebate for a qualifying heating and cooling project. Amounts depend on funding, so confirm current numbers before you sign. Our free estimate on a new AC or heat pump installation lays out both options side by side: a new AC with a gas furnace, or a heat pump that handles both.

Antelope summers make the choice matter. Sacramento has averaged about 24 days a year at 100°F or hotter since 1990, and 2024 set a record, passing the old mark of 44 days before the end of September. A system that's sized right and has tight ducts will hold up better on those long stretches.

Questions Antelope homeowners ask

Is Antelope served by SMUD or Roseville Electric?

Antelope is in Sacramento County and is served by SMUD. Roseville Electric serves the city of Roseville only. That means SMUD's heat pump and HVAC rebates are the ones available to Antelope homeowners.

Who issues HVAC permits in Antelope?

Antelope is unincorporated, so Sacramento County Building Permits and Inspection issues mechanical permits. California requires a permit to replace an AC, furnace or heat pump, and the job usually includes a HERS-verified duct leakage test. We handle the permit and inspection for you.

Why is the upstairs of my Antelope two-story so much hotter than downstairs?

In most two-story Antelope homes, one system and one thermostat serve both floors, and the upstairs ducts run through a hot attic. Leaky or disconnected ducts make it worse. Duct repair, zoning or a mini-split for the upstairs are common fixes, and we check the ducts before suggesting a bigger unit.

My AC is from the 1990s. Should I repair it or replace it?

If it uses R-22 refrigerant, a leak repair can be expensive because new R-22 hasn't been produced or imported in the U.S. since 2020. A minor electrical repair can still make sense. We'll tell you what the repair costs and what a replacement would cost so you can decide.

Can I get a rebate for a heat pump in Antelope?

SMUD offers rebates for heat pump HVAC systems, with the largest amounts for replacing gas heat. At the time of writing (2026) the program is funded, but amounts can change, so check SMUD's current terms before you commit. Rebates are paid through contractors in SMUD's Contractor Network, and Airflow is a participating contractor, so we can handle the submission for you.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
