AC installation means adding air conditioning where a home or space doesn't have it yet: an older house with no central air, a room addition, a garage conversion or an ADU. A good installation starts with a Manual J load calculation, then a duct design, an electrical check and a plan for where the outdoor unit can legally and quietly sit.

Airflow Heating & Air gives free estimates on new system installs, offers financing for qualified customers and handles residential, multi-family and light commercial projects across the Sacramento region.

Already have central air and want to swap it out? That's AC replacement, with different rules and rebates. This page covers new cooling where none existed.

Which setup fits your home?

The right system depends mostly on whether you already have ducts and a furnace.

Your situationTypical approachNotes
Gas furnace with ducts, no ACAdd an outdoor condenser and an indoor coil on the furnace, or add a heat pump insteadThe simplest add. The existing ducts may need resizing for cooling airflow.
Wall or floor furnace, no ductsNew ducted system (furnace or air handler plus ducts), or ductless mini-splitsCommon in older Sacramento homes. A heat pump handles heating and cooling in one system.
Room addition or converted garageExtend existing ducts if the current system has capacity, or add a separate systemMany existing systems don't have spare capacity. The load calculation tells us.
ADU or backyard cottageIts own small heat pump, ducted or ductlessSeparate controls and often a separate electrical service or subpanel.
Light commercial spaceSplit system or packaged rooftop unitSized to occupancy, equipment heat and ventilation needs.

For rooms or ADUs without ducts, a ductless system is often the cleanest answer. See ductless mini-split installation. If you need heating too, compare a heat pump before you commit to AC plus gas.

Sizing: why Manual J matters

Rules of thumb like "one ton per 500 square feet" are how houses end up with the wrong system. A Manual J load calculation is the industry-standard method from ACCA. It accounts for:

  • Wall, ceiling and floor insulation, and attic conditions
  • Window size, type and which way they face (west windows matter a lot in Sacramento)
  • Air leakage and duct location
  • Local design temperatures and the number of people in the home

Once the load is known, Manual S is used to pick equipment that actually delivers that capacity, and Manual D sizes the ducts. An oversized AC cools in short bursts, cycles constantly and leaves the air clammy. An undersized one runs nonstop and falls behind when Sacramento hits 100°F, which it does roughly 23 to 24 days a year on average.

Ductwork design

In a new installation, the ducts decide whether the system works as well as it should. In most Sacramento homes, ducts run through the attic, which gets far hotter than the outdoor air in summer. Good design keeps that heat out of your cooled air.

  • Right-sized trunks and branches from Manual D, so each room gets the airflow it needs without noise.
  • Return air. Enough return paths, especially for bedrooms with closed doors. Undersized returns are a common problem in older homes.
  • Short, straight runs with sealed connections and insulation that meets Title 24.
  • Leakage testing. New ducts are pressure-tested as part of Title 24 HERS verification.

Adding cooling to an older duct system? Ducts sized only for a furnace are often too small for AC airflow. We'll test them and tell you whether they need repair or replacement runs before the new equipment goes in.

Electrical panel capacity

An air conditioner or heat pump needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and a disconnect at the outdoor unit. That's straightforward if your panel has capacity and space. Older homes with 100-amp panels, especially ones adding an EV charger or electric appliances, may not.

  • We check the panel's rating, open breaker spaces and existing loads during the estimate.
  • If a load calculation shows you're short, the options are a panel upgrade by a licensed electrician, a load-management device or a different equipment choice.
  • Variable-speed systems draw less starting current, which can help on a tight panel.
  • SMUD customers converting from gas heat to a heat pump may qualify for SMUD's Go Electric bonus toward panel and circuit work at the time of writing (2026).

Where the outdoor unit can go

Condenser placement affects noise, efficiency, permits and neighbor relations. Before we set a pad, we check:

What we check for condenser placement

  • Setbacks. Many Sacramento-area cities and the county limit how close mechanical equipment can sit to side and rear property lines. Rules vary by jurisdiction and zoning.
  • HOA rules. Many HOAs, especially in newer subdivisions, require approval, a specific location or screening. Get approval before install day.
  • Noise. Keep units away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbor's. Variable-speed units run quieter at low speed.
  • Clearance and airflow. Manufacturer clearances on all sides and above, away from dryer vents and not boxed in by fences.
  • Debris. Avoid spots under cottonwoods and oaks where leaves and fluff pile up against the coil.
  • Line set length. Shorter refrigerant lines between the indoor and outdoor units are better for efficiency and cost.
  • Service access. A technician has to reach the panel and coil for years to come.

Permits, Title 24 and new refrigerants

A new AC installation needs a building permit and must meet California's Title 24 Energy Code. For a new ducted system, that typically includes HERS verification of duct leakage, airflow and refrigerant charge by an independent rater. Additions and ADUs also go through plan review, and the HVAC design is usually part of those plans.

New equipment uses A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, which replaced R-410A in new systems starting in 2025. They need A2L-rated tools and follow updated safety standards, and many systems include a leak sensor in the indoor unit.

What does AC installation cost in Sacramento?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Ducts. Adding a coil to an existing furnace costs far less than a full new duct system.
  • System type and size. AC vs heat pump, ducted vs ductless, tonnage and efficiency.
  • Electrical. A new circuit, a subpanel or a panel upgrade.
  • Access. Low attics, finished ceilings and two-story homes take more labor.
  • Placement. Long line sets, pads, screening or roof mounts.
  • Permit, plan review and HERS fees, minus any rebates that apply.

How a new AC installation works

  1. Free estimate and walkthrough. We look at the attic, existing heating, electrical panel and possible condenser spots.
  2. Load calculation and design. Manual J sizing, equipment selection and a duct layout.
  3. Written proposal. System options, scope and a clear price, with financing for qualified customers.
  4. Permit and approvals. City or county permit, and HOA approval if you need it.
  5. Installation. Ducts, indoor equipment, line set, condenser pad, electrical and thermostat. A coil added to an existing furnace takes a day or two. A full new ducted system takes longer.
  6. Start-up and verification. Charge, airflow and duct tests, then HERS and building inspection sign-off.

Where we install new AC systems

We install new air conditioning across the region, including ADUs and additions in Davis, West Sacramento, Rocklin and Lincoln.

AC installation FAQ

Can you add central air to a house without ducts?

Yes. The options are a new ducted system run through the attic or crawlspace, or ductless mini-splits mounted in each room or zone. Ductless avoids new ductwork, while a ducted system hides the equipment. We'll compare both for your floor plan.

Can I add AC to my existing gas furnace?

Usually. An outdoor condenser and an indoor coil are added on top of the furnace. We check that the furnace blower and ducts can move enough air for cooling, since furnace-only duct systems are sometimes undersized.

What size AC does my house need?

There's no reliable square-foot rule. A Manual J load calculation looks at insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage and duct location. It often shows a smaller system than a rule of thumb would, which saves money and improves comfort.

Can I extend my current AC into a new addition?

Only if the existing system has spare capacity and the ducts can carry the extra air. Many don't. If the load calculation shows it's short, a separate ductless unit or small heat pump for the addition is usually the better option.

Do I need a permit to install central air in Sacramento?

Yes. A new AC system needs a building permit and must meet Title 24, typically including HERS testing of duct leakage, airflow and refrigerant charge. Additions and ADUs also go through plan review.

Will my electrical panel handle a new AC?

Many will, but older 100-amp panels may be short on capacity or breaker space, especially if you're also adding an EV charger. We check the panel during the estimate and tell you if a licensed electrician needs to upgrade it.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
