An AC tune-up is a once-a-year cleaning, inspection and performance test of your air conditioner, done in spring before the system has to handle Sacramento's 100°F days. It catches the parts that fail most often in summer heat, like capacitors and contactors, and restores efficiency lost to dirty coils and filters.

Airflow Heating & Air's NATE-certified technicians work through a full checklist and explain what they find. Check our offers page, which may list a current tune-up special.

What's included in an AC tune-up

Outdoor unit

  • Clean the condenser coil, rinsing out cottonwood fluff, leaves, grass and dust
  • Inspect the fan blade and motor, and check amp draw
  • Test the run and start capacitors against their rated values
  • Inspect the contactor for pitting, burning or insects
  • Tighten electrical connections and check the disconnect
  • Check refrigerant line insulation and look for oil stains that signal a leak

Indoor unit and airflow

  • Check or replace the air filter, and confirm the right size and MERV rating
  • Inspect the evaporator coil for dirt and corrosion where accessible
  • Check the blower motor and wheel
  • Flush and test the condensate drain, pan and float switch
  • Look at visible ductwork and connections at the equipment

Performance and safety

  • Measure supply and return temperatures (temperature split)
  • Check refrigerant charge using superheat or subcooling, without adding refrigerant unless there's a reason
  • Measure compressor amp draw and voltage
  • Test thermostat operation and cycling
  • Note anything near the end of its life, so you can plan instead of being surprised

When to schedule: spring, before the first 100°F day

Sacramento has averaged about 23 to 24 days a year at 100°F or hotter since 1990, and in 2024 the region topped its old record of 44 such days. The first heat wave is when weak parts fail, and it's also when every HVAC company's phones ring at once. A tune-up in March, April or May gets the work done on your schedule.

Spring timing also matters for a local reason: cottonwood trees along the American River and around the region shed fluff in late spring. It mats onto condenser coils and cuts airflow. If you live near the river or under big oaks, a coil cleaning after the fluff falls is worth it.

SeasonWhat to do
Spring (March to May)AC tune-up, coil cleaning, new filter
SummerCheck the filter monthly. Keep the outdoor unit clear and hose off debris.
Smoke events (often summer and fall)Check the filter more often and replace it when it looks gray
FallFurnace tune-up before the first cold nights

A heat pump does both jobs, so it benefits from a visit in spring and again in fall.

Filters during wildfire smoke season

When wildfire smoke settles over the valley, your HVAC system can help clean the air indoors, but only if the filter can catch fine particles and the system runs enough to move air through it.

Filter ratingWhat it catchesSmoke season notes
MERV 1 to 4Large dust and lintProtects the equipment, does little for smoke
MERV 5 to 8Dust, pollen, mold sporesCommon standard filter, limited help with smoke
MERV 9 to 12Finer dust, pet danderBetter, but still lets many smoke particles through
MERV 13A large share of fine particles, including much of the smoke rangeThe level commonly recommended for smoke, if your system can handle the airflow
  • Check airflow before you upgrade. A thin one-inch MERV 13 filter can restrict airflow on some systems, which can freeze the coil or strain the blower. A tune-up is a good time to test this.
  • Consider a media cabinet. A four- or five-inch filter cabinet holds a high-MERV filter with much less airflow restriction. See air filtration.
  • Run the fan during smoke events. Air only gets filtered when it moves. Set the fan to On, keep windows closed and change the filter when it darkens.
  • Want more than filtration? UV lights, whole-home purifiers and odor control are covered on our air purification page.

What you can do between tune-ups

  1. Change the filter. Every one to three months, and more often during smoke, construction or with pets.
  2. Keep the outdoor unit clear. About two feet of space on all sides. Trim shrubs and keep grass clippings away from the fins.
  3. Rinse the coil gently. With the power off, use a garden hose (never a pressure washer) to rinse debris from the fins.
  4. Watch the drain. Water around the furnace or a system that shuts off on its own can mean a clogged condensate line.
  5. Listen and watch. New noises, longer run times or a rising bill are early signs. Call before it becomes an AC repair on a 105°F day.

Maintenance plans

If you'd rather not track this yourself, ask us about a maintenance plan. Plans generally bundle a spring AC visit and a fall furnace visit with scheduled reminders. Many equipment manufacturers also require proof of regular professional maintenance to keep a warranty valid, so check your paperwork. Current plan details and any seasonal specials are on our offers page.

What does an AC tune-up cost in Sacramento?

Pricing: every system and home is different, so we price each job after a free look at your equipment, ductwork and electrical. You get a clear, written price before any work starts. Call (916) 476-2222 to schedule.

What moves the price:

  • Number of systems. Two-story homes often have two.
  • Coil condition. A heavily matted condenser or a dirty indoor coil takes extra cleaning.
  • Filter. Standard filters vs a media cabinet filter.
  • Access. Attic and crawlspace equipment takes longer.
  • Findings. Parts or refrigerant are quoted separately, and only replaced with your approval.

Tune-up, repair or something else?

A tune-up keeps a working system healthy. If your AC isn't cooling right now, book an AC repair instead. If the system is old and the tune-up shows major wear, we'll tell you plainly and you can compare replacement options. Dusty vents and debris inside the ducts are a separate job, covered by duct cleaning.

Where we do AC tune-ups

We service air conditioners across the region, including Roseville, Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Granite Bay.

AC tune-up FAQ

How often should I get an AC tune-up in Sacramento?

Once a year, in spring. Sacramento summers are long and hot, so the system runs many more hours than in milder climates. Heat pumps should be serviced in spring and fall, since they handle both cooling and heating.

Is an AC tune-up worth it?

Yes, for most systems. A clean coil and correct airflow help the system run efficiently, and testing capacitors and contactors catches the most common summer failures before they leave you without cooling. Many manufacturer warranties also require regular maintenance.

How long does an AC tune-up take?

Usually about an hour to an hour and a half per system. Heavily soiled coils, attic equipment or a second system add time.

Should I use a MERV 13 filter for wildfire smoke?

MERV 13 is the level commonly recommended for smoke, but a thin one-inch MERV 13 filter can restrict airflow on some systems. Have the airflow checked first, or install a thicker media filter cabinet that handles high-MERV filters with less restriction.

Does a tune-up include adding refrigerant?

No, and it shouldn't by default. A properly working system doesn't lose refrigerant. If the charge is low, that means a leak, and we'll explain the repair options before adding anything.

What's the difference between a tune-up and duct cleaning?

A tune-up services the equipment: coils, electrical parts, refrigerant, drain and airflow. Duct cleaning removes dust and debris from inside the duct system. They're separate services, and most homes need tune-ups far more often than duct cleaning.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
