AC, Furnace & Heat Pump Service in Vacaville, CA

Vacaville sits where the Bay's cooling runs thin, and it sees about twice as many 100-degree days as Fairfield. We size systems for that heat and file the permit with Vacaville, Dixon or Winters.

Airflow Heating & Air is a family-owned Sacramento-area HVAC contractor that repairs, replaces and installs air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps and ductless systems in Vacaville, CA. Our technicians are NATE-certified, we hold CSLB License #956515 (C-20), and we offer 24/7 emergency service.

This page also covers Dixon and Winters. Both are incorporated cities with their own building departments, so the permit for a Dixon or Winters home goes to that city, not to Vacaville. Dixon is in Solano County like Vacaville, while Winters sits across Putah Creek in Yolo County.

Where the sea breeze runs out

On summer afternoons, cooler air from the Bay pushes through the Carquinez Strait and spreads inland. The National Weather Service describes that Delta breeze as gusty southwest wind that arrives in the afternoon and drops temperatures quickly. Fairfield gets a strong dose of it. By the time it reaches Vacaville, it is weaker and less reliable. The Daily Republic, citing Western Regional Climate Center records, puts Vacaville at about 21 days a year above 100 degrees, against roughly 11 in Fairfield.

So a Vacaville system has to carry long afternoons and may get no relief after sunset. That changes the job:

  • Size for the hot evenings, not just the peak. When the breeze stalls, the house never cools off overnight and the AC starts the next day already behind. We run a load calculation for your actual house instead of copying the old nameplate.
  • Keep the attic out of the airstream. Attic ducts in a Vacaville summer sit in air far hotter than outdoors. Leaks there cost more than they would near the coast. Duct sealing is often the cheaper fix.
  • Watch the outdoor unit. Condensers that bake on west-facing walls lose capacity on the days you need it. A spring tune-up clears the coil and checks the capacitor before June.

Vacaville houses by decade

Vacaville incorporated in 1892 and stayed a farm town for decades, then grew fast. Census counts show about 21,690 residents in 1970, 43,367 in 1980 and 71,479 in 1990. The 2020 Census counted 102,386. Most of the houses we work on date from that growth, but each era has its own habits.

Older homes near downtown

Houses closest to the old town center often predate central air. Ducts were added later through tight attics or crawlspaces, and some rooms were never on the system at all. A ductless mini-split can cool a back bedroom or a converted garage without new duct runs.

The 1970s and 1980s build-out

Many homes from the 1970s and 1980s boom are on their second or third system now, with original ductwork that has sagged, split or come apart at the boots. Replacing the equipment without testing the ducts usually leaves comfort on the table.

Newer neighborhoods to the southeast

The city lists Brighton Landing, Roberts' Ranch, Vanden Meadows and Southtown among its major residential projects. Brighton Landing alone was approved in 2013 for 767 single-family homes near Leisure Town and Elmira roads. Systems there are younger, so the work is mostly maintenance, filter upgrades and warranty repairs.

Fire season on the west side of town

In August 2020, lightning started the Hennessey Fire, the largest part of the LNU Lightning Complex. It burned into the English Hills area on Vacaville's western edge, destroyed homes there and jumped Interstate 80. CAL FIRE's final count for the whole complex was 363,220 acres and 1,491 structures destroyed across five counties, Solano and Yolo among them.

Smoke from fires like that can hang over the valley floor for days. Vacaville, Dixon and Winters all fall under the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District, while Fairfield is covered on its own page. Our air filtration work starts by checking the filter rack and static pressure, because a filter that chokes airflow causes its own problems.

HVAC services for Vacaville homes

Permits in Vacaville, Dixon and Winters

California requires a permit to replace a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump, and the Title 24 energy code usually adds HERS verification, such as a duct leakage test, by an independent rater. Which office issues the permit depends on the address.

  • Vacaville. The City of Vacaville Building Division issues permits through its eTRAKiT portal. A like-for-like HVAC replacement with no new circuits or gas lines can qualify for an express permit, listed as a Basic Residential Replacement. Anything beyond a straight swap goes through the regular process.
  • Dixon. The City of Dixon issues its own permits through an online portal and offers an instant permit for direct HVAC changeouts. That instant permit cannot be used when a split system is replaced with a heat pump or mini-split, and the city asks for a Title 24 analysis with the application.
  • Winters. The City of Winters handles building permits through its Community Development Department, separate from Yolo County.
  • Outside city limits. Rural addresses near Vacaville and Dixon go to Solano County Building & Safety. Unincorporated land around Winters goes to the Yolo County Building Division.

We confirm the jurisdiction from the parcel, pull the permit, schedule the HERS test and meet the inspector.

Rebates and tax credits right now

The federal 25C energy efficiency tax credit ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025, so it no longer applies to a new system. Other incentives open and close through the year, so we check what is taking applications when we write your quote. In Vacaville and Dixon, PG&E delivers both gas and electricity. In Winters, Valley Clean Energy buys the electricity and PG&E delivers it and supplies gas.

Before we quote a system in Vacaville, we check

  • Whether the address is in Vacaville, Dixon, Winters or unincorporated county land
  • A room-by-room load calculation that accounts for west sun and late-evening heat
  • Attic duct leakage, since the permit will likely require a HERS test
  • Panel capacity and the gas line, if you are weighing a heat pump against a furnace
  • Whether your filter rack and blower can handle a higher-MERV filter for smoke season
  • Which incentive programs are open the month you buy

Questions Vacaville homeowners ask

Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Vacaville?

Yes. Inside city limits the City of Vacaville Building Division issues it, and a straight like-for-like swap may qualify for the city's express permit in eTRAKiT. Most replacements also need a HERS test under Title 24. We file the permit and book the inspection as part of the job.

Who handles permits for a home in Dixon or Winters?

Each city issues its own. Dixon homes go through the City of Dixon, and Winters homes go through the City of Winters. Rural addresses outside those cities go to Solano County or Yolo County, depending on which side of Putah Creek they sit. We check the parcel before we apply.

Why does my Vacaville house stay warm long after sunset?

Vacaville gets less of the evening Delta breeze than towns closer to the Bay, so on many summer nights the outdoor air never cools enough to help. Sealed ducts, good attic insulation and a correctly sized system make the biggest difference.

Is a heat pump a good fit for a Vacaville home?

For many homes, yes. Winters here bring fog and frost but rarely long hard freezes, which modern heat pumps handle well. It makes the most sense when the AC is also near the end of its life and your panel has room. We price a heat pump and a furnace side by side so you can compare.

What should I do with my HVAC system on a smoky day?

Close the windows, set the fan to recirculate and keep any fresh-air damper or whole-house fan shut. A higher-efficiency filter helps if your system can handle the airflow, which we can check during a visit.

We are thrilled with Oleg and the work he and his team did to install a heat pump, remove the A/C and detangle our hydronic heating system! The price was great, the work was great, the follow-up and follow-through were great. The team was super fast, getting it all done in one day. Oleg is such a great guy - extremely thorough, kind and does such good work. The inspector said "wow, he did a really clean job". We will highly recommend Oleg to anyone who needs HVAC!

I can’t say enough about Oleg and his staff, they were truly professional from initial diagnosis to installation. My heating system ceased working and my family and I were left in the cold. I reached out to Airflow based on the superlative reviews I saw in my research. Oleg came out and knew exactly what my issue was and also uncovered a problem with my dampening system which for the past 25 years no one was able to correct. Oleg told me what I needed, no sales pressure, promised to send me an estimate that day which he did. The cost was exceptionally fair and coupled with the impression Airflow had made I decided to go with them without further research or estimates for price comparisons….wasn’t necessary, this was the guy. I requested early January thinking I could tough it out, however it just got too uncomfortable in the house. I reached out to Oleg who by the way was quite busy and he moved some stuff around and did the entire install the next day. My home is now warm and comfortable. Oleg was a pleasure to deal with. This guy is an Einstein when it comes to HVAC and I will not do business with anyone else from this point forward. Thanks Oleg, you and your staff are top notch. My HVAC system has never operated at this level before.

We highly recommend Airflow Heating & Air for your heating or air conditioning needs. Oleg and his crew installed 2 independent systems in our 2-story home built in the early 1900s. Both the Daikin mini-split and the Goodman heat pump system work to perfection, keeping our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. What we appreciated most, along with professionalism and a clean job site, was Oleg’s genuine interest in ensuring that we were completely satisfied with the installations.

I’ve used Airflow Heating and Air for years for both my personal home and multiple rental properties. These guys are truly top-notch. What sets Airflow apart is their honesty and thoroughness. Instead of immediately pushing a full system replacement like many HVAC companies do, AirFlow takes the time to properly diagnose the issue and recommend repairs whenever possible, always keeping my budget in mind. They clearly explain the options so you can make an informed decision without pressure. When a full replacement is necessary, they’re just as impressive. I’ve trusted Airflow with two complete system replacements, and both were smooth, professional, and fairly priced. They handled the entire process including permits and inspections which made everything incredibly easy for me and my tenants. Overall, Airflow Heating and Air has been reliable, professional, and easy to work with every step of the way. Their communication is excellent, their work is high quality, and they truly stand behind what they do. I trust them completely and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC service! 10/10

Oleg was referred to me by my neighbor. My neighbor said he will never go with anyone else for his HVAC needs - and I now I understand why! Both times I reached out, he responded to me within minutes, and came out to my house the very next day. He's honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and just an all around cool dude. Thanks, Oleg!
